MrSpeakers Electrostatic Prototype Listening Impressions

I think the statement applies because he looks quite happy with what he has, but there is something out there that is at least to many people better. So he wants it.

Obviously I'm not impartial but I think the BHSE has achieved that status. It's been the stats amp everything is judged by since its creation 10 years ago? But it draws it's lineage from the original KGBH which was his take unseen if I'm not mistaken on the T2. So you could argue it goes back to 2004?

Either way I am really enjoying hearing peoples impressions of the voce. Hopefully more will continue to filter in. Especially those with high-end amps because stats will scale.

This is a much more elegant way of saying what i was trying to get it. Thanks!

So a few more days of listening and I am still enjoying it very much. I have found myself listening to stuff I normally wouldn't like bluegrass and jazz of all things and enjoying it! Just listening to the timber and sound of the instruments is really fun. i would still call this a neutral headphone and I have settled on the white insert as my preferred setup. I still feel that the tone is wonderful and there is plenty of bass. Rock music sounds GREAT out of this headphone!

Here is some good news for those interested in the ifi pro-iesl. I have found that this requires a lot less power then it sounded like it would to drive the VOCE. I bought an RCA to speaker wire cable and plugged in my favorite tube amp, (Dragon Inspire IHA-1) and it worked perfectly. I have to turn the volume to between 12 and 2 to get a comfortable level but this is not a strong amp by any means. I think if the amp can make a watt or so it will probably be usable.

I wanted to give an update on the boxes. The factory missed their deadline of last Friday for delivery, however we did a site visit today and we are happy that the major issues have been addressed and we expect to receive a number of boxes Thursday. We'll begin shipping in volume on Friday, and will send boxes to those who opted to take the headphone right away over the following 2-3 weeks.

Our apologies for the delay!

I have had a few weeks with my VOCE and It seems to have gotten even better! Still neutral but with such definition and clarity. It’s fun to listen to and really shows the differences between sources and amps.

If you are interested in the ifi iESL then I strongly recommend that you purchase a 4 pin XLR extension cable. This is just a balanced headphone extension cable but it allows you to use any headamp with the iESL, even if it does not have speaker outputs or preamp outputs. Plus it’s way easier to swap a single cable then to unplug 4 speaker wires. The one I bought was 100 bucks on amazon, but I’m sure there are cheaper options elsewhere.

Now for some really cool news about the iESL. Almost any amp will drive this thing. I plugged in my Cavalli liquid carbon amp and it sounded wonderful on the VOCE. I enjoyed this paring a lot. The volume knob is in the 12 o’clock to 2 position on LOW gain! Any more and it’s too loud to listen to. I also used an XLR to 3.5 mm adapter and plugged in my Mojo. Yes, a chord Mojo will drive the VOCE louder then you can listen to using the iESL, and it sounds really fun. I would definitely love to hear the Hugo or Dave.

That is great news.

I’d been wondering how much power it would really need.

Yes, iFi is certainly conservative with their recommmendations. All of my headphone amps have powered the VOCE quite well and each brings a different sound. I’m looking forward to hearing others experiences with the iESL and I can’t wait to get a dedicated electrostatic amp to see how that sounds with the VOCE.

That’s great, I had assumed speaker amps were required, this makes it really versatile. I have an iFI coming soon to test...

Yes, we're shipping steadily now. UK and Japan distributors have theirs, most of our direct individual orders should ship within the next 10 days. Lead time for new orders is about 4-6 weeks. Other retailers will start receiving stock over the next two to four weeks.
