MQA.... Scam or not?

Mar 19, 2023 at 3:43 AM Post #121 of 197
If you have a thread with the title "is mqa a scam" and 50% or more of the respondents say yes, you have problems with your business model. They have been very secretive about what they are doing/done, and charge relatively a lot to allow companies to use their technologies. Doesn't seem to me to a long term go-forward proposition for the owners...

And yet more than five years later it's still fine.

apple only 16/44, but tidal master min is 24/44?
You have at least two threads going with mostly identical questions. Hard to keep up, so after this I'm done.

No, Masters can also be in 16/44.1

If you prefer streaming music in a direct FLAC file, buy hi-res tracks at a discounted price, Qobuz would be suitable for you.

Tidal will be a great choice if you want to try out streaming music in MQA format and discover new hip-hop songs daily.

Both have their strengths and weak points, but the winner really goes down to the user’s preference and what songs they play.

That's just an 'appeal to popularity' fallacy.

Agreed, the appeal to popularity is for people who don't subscribe to Tidal and have no standing to scream scam. I guess people have a lot of free time and nothing important to worry about.

As for me and all the other subscribers, we're getting what we paid for for the last five years. The self-righteous indignation and a$$holier than thou attitude of those telling us what to like and what not to like is despicable and belongs in the audioscientolgy forum :D

Qobuz high-res version sounds the same or even better than MQA, in that aspect they make you pay for thin air with their original master blabla.

MQA was initially created to solve the problem of transporting high-res audio over slow network but by the time they were ready technology caught up. Off course ROI was needed but Qobuz was proving high-res streaming didn't need MQA so they had to repitch their marketing gimmick to original master story.

If Qobuz didn't have such big gaps I would ditch Tidal in a sec.

I agree with you that compression is pointless and dumb now, although in 1980 it was revolutionary and worthwhile.

Qobuz is available in very few countries compared to Tidal. After years of idle threats we still cannot subscribe. To my knowledge there is exactly one bitperfect desktop streaming service that we can pay for here and that is Tidal. Tidal Hifi Plus here is half the price of Qobuz UK. So I am less interested in Qobuz as the years go by. Tidal, Deezer, and scamazon have most of what I'm looking for.

It doesn't help if Qobuz is not available in your country. Here it is not.

Tidal has almost all the classic jazz and rock that I want. It's not just for trying things out.

Both have their strengths and weak points, but the winner really goes down to the user’s preference and what songs they play.

I agree with this. What streaming you pick should be a combination of good sound, good user interface, and the music you want.

Gimmeheadroom was responding to a post that claimed there were problems with the business model, popularity is a better measure of this than how many cancel culture warriors rant about it on the internet.
It's certainly also a good measure of ignorance.
You can't only have it one way.

I don't think anyone here is telling anyone what to like or dislike.
This thread is about dishonesty from MQA and consumer ignorance.

I don't see the point in using deragatory labels, that doesn't add to the debate.
- "cancel culture warriors"
- "a$$holier than thou attitude"

Please... keep things civil.

You're calling us ignorant and complaining about derogatory labels?

This is what I have been saying.

To be more clear, we don't need your crusades. You're free to not to save us from ourselves.

At no point did I call anyone one specific person ignorant.
To be more clear, we don't need your crusades. You're free to not to save us from ourselves.
Then why are you here?
You're also free to not respond to a thread you disagree with.

I hope you can appreciate the irony here.

That said... ignorance in of itself is not an insult, nor is it a sin.
So, chosing to feel that it is derogatory only proves you are?

It's a shame you are running around with a pitchfork and torch regarding something that doesn't affect you at all. And now, into my ignore list you go, despite the fact I have enjoyed your posts and thanked you for sharing your knowledge in various threads in the past.

What you're doing in this thread is indefensible. Nobody needs that.
