i bought a creative zen+ usb2.0 when it came out (and i cant remember when, probably around 2002ish). it was amazing, great navigation and awesome sq. the 6 hour battery life really sucked though.
i have a lot of fond memories of that player.

Sony NW-E3

NWE3 - MP3 player - MP3, Liquid Audio, WMA, ATRAC3, SDMI, WAV - 45 g - Battery Lifespan: 4 hour(s)

Still got it and it still sounds fantastic. The MegaBass button actually does its job of providing mind numbing bass, And it did its job. Used to eat batteries though, I mean 4 hours Batt life

Creative Jukebox.. Hard drive based shaped just like a CD player. Thought it was utter garbage after the novelty wore off. I believe it was one of the first of this type.

I filled up a 1GB crappo-matic player with mp3s for someone. God did it sound awful.

We obviously get accustomed to high-quality audio.

Awesome! I still have mine somewhere but the headphone socket is knackered... Not my first mind, had a really dodgy 16MB player. That's right - not even an album's worth. Get in.

First mp3 player (I owned a MiniDisc player before then, still have it and about 150 MDs) was a Creative Zen 40gb in 2002 or 2003, not entirely sure.

I ended up upgrading it myself to 60gb. However, because of ONE darn screw at the back of the unit that did not wanted to come off no matter what, I had to rip the cover off the unit on one of the corners. Not that it really mattered since I always used it in its protective case so you couldn't really see the bent corner after I put everything back in place...

Anyway, today, both 40gb and 60gb HDs are still in use in Vantec 2.5 enclosures as temporary backups, but the mp3 player itself is just a shell...

For my money mp3-players did not become viable replacements to regular portable CDPs until they sported capacities that would hold 60-100 songs in decent quality.
To negate having to lug loads of CDs about.

My mp3-CD iRiver iMP-550 counted.

One of the first things to play Ogg VORBIS too.

It had Optical-out too, so with a good DAC, like the H120 never loses out in SQ. Shamed it broeked long ago.

My first was given to me by my dad. I don't remember the exact model number since it was forever ago, but it was a Samsung Yepp. It was blue and it was only like a gig or so.

Creative MuVo 64MB and right after that Creative Nomad Jukebox3 20 GB in 2002. Both still work. And quite honestly I havent seen anything that would match Jukebox 3 feature set (optical out, two line outs for surround speakers, fully custom EQ, analog recording via line in, external mic, or one built into the remote control) I frequently use that for live recordings off the mixing desk. But yes - it is rather big for today's standards
