Agreed about PF being overrated. Their songs are extremely catchy and lyrics usually decent (occasionally rather silly), and they've put out a few records that do deserve "classic" status. But they're still overrated... artistically they're competent but hardly geniuses.

I don't know. To put out a few classic records in no mean feat! As far as the rock genre goes, the're a lot better than competent. What they managed to do was to not sound like anyone else and I think that's a sign of real originality and - which is about as much "genius" as you'll find in the rock genre. I mean is Dylan a genius? A great lyricist, but just an okay song writer. Were the Beatles geniuses? Great songwriters, but does that really constitute genius? Now was Mozart a genius? A prodigy certainly and probably a genius as a composer. Beethoven? Most likely. They produced music like no one else had. Hm, so did Pink Floyd.

oy. i said they were "pretentious", not "overrated", which i went to pains to explain the difference.

any band that can write a song that gives me chills every time i hear it is not overrated in my mind (comfortably numb).
