yeah there are those that seem obvious like silverchair and wolfmother, at the same time, i found something in band of horses' self titled that instantly got me connected from their first note.

remeber that many of the early classic rock bands were very much influenced by the blues, and covewred a lot of blues songs with their own twist.  so where you want to look is at the cross over between rock and the blues, which is where Joe fits in.  Jeff Heally would be another.  I like a lot of what Ronnie Earl does, and the latest Mick Fleetwood Blues Band, "Blue Again" is worth checking out.
 
If you are a classic rock fan, the blues will get to you so be prepared

Second The Black Keys, first time I heard them I thought they were from the '70s.
 
Also X2 Monster Magnet, "Dopes To Infinity" et al, based on a sound that came out of the late '60s.
 
Another one of my favorite bands, Queens of the Stone Age, for me, carry the torch of rock and roll. I haven't heard their eponymous first release but for the rest would rate them in this order: Lullabyes To Paralyze, Era Vulgaris, Songs For The Deaf, and Rated R (which is the only one that I feel has any filler songs).
