Mod House Audio Tungsten - Planar Magnetic Headphones - Impressions and Discussion

Wrong :)
My daily headphone is HD650 and yes, I listen to them on SGP1. You wouldn’t believe how HD650 could sound: no veil, full bodied sound with sub bass and treble extension. People say that Susvara and Tungsten are hard to drive. Well, HD650 benefits from SGP1 as much as Tungsten.
Atrium Open is amazing on SGP1. But Atrium Closed becomes a pair of sub woofers on your head :D I don’t recommend that. LOL
My 3X GT elevated my AudioQuest NightOwls to another level.

Someone said they were like putting expensive speakers in car and listen to them on the outside with all the windows closed. Harsh imho, but now they are in a convertible with the roof down.

^^The 3XGT is one of the top choices I'm researching. However, I saw on a YT video, the reviewer really cranking it to 90+ or something like that, with the Tungsten. Not sure if that was crazy loud listening levels, but I suspect it was. My phone app decibel meter estimates me listening no higher than 80 dB.

On 3XGT??! What video was that?

The only video I’ve seen with a Burson was Zeos and that was the 3XP and pre production Tungs. The 3X Performance is well down on power compared to the GT.

Later he had a production set and it was at 75 ish.

What is SGP1? Yes, sometimes I get lost with all the abbreviated names and shorthanded references that seem to be part of the "staple diet" of head-fi-speak :):):).

Yes, I think it was the Zeos. Maybe I'm wrong, as he was switching between numerous amps in that video. Did he have it at 75? That's more reassuring to hear.

Zeos definitely had the 3XP not GT and yes it was 90+

But he had a guy after the end of the review with a finished pair of production versions and I’m sure it was around 75ish.
Got it, thanks for the clarification. I'm definitely interested in a TOTL-ish solid state amp and really like what I'm reading/hearing about the 3XGT. This one, plus Headamp GSX/Mini, and Ferrum Oor all seem like contenders. I'd like to get a SS amp that is "future proof" meaning it will drive Tungsten and similar cans that are hard to drive. I can only imagine the frustration of people who own great SS amps and get the Tungsten only to find their amp is under-powered.

I kinda bought the GT without intention. I when to try the XP due to the price

Shop had the GT on sale and it was a lot better, plus as you, I decided the overall much higher ability was the way to go.

I think the Ferrum is great looking especially as a stack. It’s down on power I think but the all important volts are high.

The fan on the GT is an issue in a quiet room and if your close with openbacks. But 4’+ away and it’s fine.

If I had the choice to buy again I’d maybe, maybe get the Ferrum, better volume pot, instant switches.

But this price point you have options.

The GT is a tank but I love it.

Did anyone try the other Caldera Pads on the Tungsten.
You can't buy them with rings but probably mod them yourself

Also, the upcoming CFA3 is a contender. Pricing is not available yet, and I suspect it will be an expensive option.

Our HeadAmp CFA3 will be our best option by far for the Tungsten. I've been doing a lot of testing with it. We'll also have both the single and double sided driver versions with our CFA3 amp at CanJam NY on Mar 9-10

But damnn if the Tungs don’t just lie back and go ahhhhhhh this is how it’s done

just one data point, but I see the Soloist Voyager is spec'ed at 1.3W balanced out for 150 ohm, or about what the Tungsten is. For comparison, the CFA3 is a capable of at least 4W at that impedance, in what has probably coincidentally ended up a very similar size chassis/form factor.
