No they do not have red drivers under the hood. I can't imagine Grado issuing a new version of the RS1i's that are sonically different than the ones that they've been making for years, the RS1's being almost iconic with the audiophile intelligencia. I'll check how the drivers fit in the wooden cups for you.

Mine sounded pretty congested and gutless at first but its getting much better...

The second pic is my setup, AudioGD11.32 amp/DAC out to the Glenn OTL the first pic is a store demo Fosgate Signature amp.
 
The cases are what the HD800's come in lol In the first pic everything from the center HD800 in the box to the right is mine... I shared a table with the shop.
