Mini-REVIEW: MOE Audio SS01 (WARNING: Tongue-In-Cheek and Tacky)

Kafeeman is right, phase is completely different thing anyway. Never a good idea to rely on approximations, in other words, square waves

Where was I talking about phase? That's something completely different.

Talking about measurements I always thought Tyll's FRs (edit) are a bit off. This would explain why tomsky2000 hears humps and dips in the midrange that the graph doesn't show.
FR graphs from goldenears and Rin Choi are the most reliable, in my opinion.

You said:
"If we had a perfectly flat FR from 1000 Hz to 10 Hz we would get a perfect 30 Hz square wave response and vice versa."
This is incorrect since you will not get perfect square with non linear phase response, even with flat FR.
In other words: Flat FR =/= perfect square

^ I just reread this article on Inner Fidelity and it seems you're right.

But since we are given a FR and phase response the square wave response shouldn't add anything new.

I hope I am right this time

Square waves are indeed approximations, and I've always from CSD/burst decays to be more intuitive and informative, but this is the information we have. I started peeping deeper into the square wave response and what it could possibly mean because kova4a started declaring things about the FXT90 being much better in the bass region, despite rolloff, and none of the measurements really support that claim.

For FR, let's not get into the merits/demerits of independent-of-direction compensation. The raw data is there, and it should be enough to get a good idea of what's going on. For the record, the SS01 sounds more mid-bassy than the graphs suggest, but it's not unpleasant. I'm happy to accept the majority of the SS01's technical shortcomings, for $60. The big question is whether it's an improvement over the FXT90 --- I would hazard to say yes, given the information obtained on Tyll's HATS. Subjectively, again, jgray91 will help perhaps corroborate the FR and other results. Perhaps he'll end up disliking the SS01, who knows. I can only state that I haven't heard the FXT90 in a while, but I really don't remember being as impressed with the FXT90. Would I have been this impressed with the FXT90 if it began life discounted at $60? Perhaps, perhaps not.

Quantitatively, would another set of measurements from Rin help? Of course. I'd be happy to send these over to him after jgray91 is done with them, but I understand he's currently predisposed with other stuff. He's been MIA for a number of weeks.

Nah, "better" is always subjective. As far as my claim it's based on experience because the fxt90's bass clearly rolls off as seen on both the FR graph and the 30hz square wave. That makes the bass recover faster while pretty much every single iem I've tried with boosted sub-bass and FR like that of SS01 is slower in the bass department, which makes it a bit looser. And as I said there's some weird deviation in the measurements - as if the left channel's bass is a touch puncher but slightly rolling off. Also with the thd graph where apparently the left channel's bass has worse power handling and distorts more both at 90 and 100db. Anyway, these are very slow deviations and still all these graphs are not always indicative of the actual performance of iem. Like with the recent measurements of vsonic VSD1 and VSD1S, where I hear more differences in the bass than the ever so slight difference in their measurements indicates.

From his thread:

Yeah, sure. I like the SS01 - definitely a good value for the price. The bass to me is pretty solid, very extended and good punch without much bloat. Mids are pretty good, mostly level, maybe a touch thin, The treble is nice and energetic, a little edgy but not too bad. Reminds me of the ATH-CKM500 - not really peaky, but has an edge to it that occasionally bothers me (with metal, for example, especially poorly-mastered stuff).

I know it's supposed to be related to the FXT90 but its voicing is pretty different - not nearly as much of a mid-bass hump, which takes away the warmth and fullness of the JVCs, and less treble sparkle (though I don't remember the FXT90 having this edgy character).

By the way, call me crazy but I don't mind the look of these. They won't get a spread in Maxim any time soon but I won't mistake them for anything else in my collection and I really like how the packaging and earphone design revolve around the "S". The name also looks much better when you write it in all caps like that. I've been calling it "Moe" in my notes.

The rest of us are still waiting for them. Should be another week or two before you start seeing more impressions.

Got mine in. Quick impressions:

I'm sensitive to the 3-4k region, so these sound a bit bright to me. The juiced up treble and the slightly boosted midbass seems to overpower subbass. Very tip dependant as well. The included bi flanges seem to do better than the included foam and silicone tips for me.

Clarity is unreal however. Surpasses RE-400 clarity, but RE-400 mids I think might be slightly better, IMO.

The shell is much smaller than pics make it out to be, and a lot less ugly in person. I kinda like it.

If the 4k peak dips a bit over time, I'll have a new favorite. Definitely a winner at $60.
