same size drivers but not the same exact driver unlike the d2k and d5k which share exactly the same driver

Forget the HD600/650 clamping story, I happen to have quite a big head

and never had such an issue with them. Also, modding Denons can add quite a bit of weight, so that decreases their comfort, keep that in mind.

ok wow thanks a lot guys. to answer the plasticy sound i heard about is only from lawton audio's website, it is under the description for the custom wood cups. hearing all these stuff about the d7000 driver and its larger magnet makes the sound so much better than the modded d2000/5000 makes me really reconsider now on the option of downgrading to d2000/5000. as for the somewhat harsh treble sound (sibilance?) found on the denon series, i thought the reason for this was because it was not receiving enough current, can anyone provide some feedback to this? thanks

Well, I can confirm that sibilance is amplification dependent. For example, I've heard an unmodded D2000 in mini-meet and it sounded sibilant out of an iBasso D3 Phyton but much less so out of my Audio-gd Compass. My friend also notices that there's a slight hiss with some tracks out of the D3 but it's absent with the Compass.

As for how far behind the D2000/D5000 is behind the D7000. IIRC HeadphoneAddict mentioned that this markl'd, recabled, woodied D2000 is more or less the same with the D7000 with the modded D2000 having a slight edge in treble extension. Another friend here who have both has a different opinion though. He said that his highly modded D2000 is slightly behind his partially markl'd and rebalanced D7000 but otherwise pretty much at stock condition with the D2000 being the more forward and analytical sibling while the D7000 is warmer and more musical. Interestingly, he claimed that a modded D5000 falls behind the modded D2000.

Its your amp and source that need upgrading. the d7000 needs good powerfull amplification and a good clean dac to sound the best. and the d5000 has boomier bass than d7000 and i imagine d2000 is similar to d5000.
