I was wondering which top 3 dynamic headphones there are in each category in your opinion:

FWIR:

Hi-Fi:
AKG K1000
Sennheiser HD800
Sony R-10

Mid-Hi-Fi:
Grado RS-1
Sennheiser HD650
AKG K702

You are talking about dynamic cans only ? I haven't owned any hi - fi cans , but my mid fi top 3 would rather have Audio-Technica AD2000, than K702.

Every one listed is good and once you go into either level its just personal preference really. Many people say the hd600 is better than the 650. Then there is the Ad2000/D7000/Hp1000/K1000/Ps-1/L3000/edition 9/W5000/stats/ prolly more I'm forgetting.

I'm just waiting to see the attack dogs get in here and go at it now lol.

Typically mid-fi is considered "euphonic" and hi-fi is considered neutral.
I'm not going to attempt to name top 3 hi-fi, but for mid-fi I would probably go with AD2000/HD650/D7000(modded). I would knock the grados down to fourth, but that's a matter of opinion. For that matter the k70X are good phones, but not suited to my tastes.

Real hi-fi all sound about the same level to me, just different flavors. Except the O2, which despite technically doing everything right, musically does everything wrong for me.

Mid-hi-fi dynamics would be AD2000s, certain AT woodies, RS1 and probably HF2 and MS Pro. K702/HD650/600 do NOT belong with the above, imo. In fact, I would say that Beyer/Senn/AKG have never made any dynamics in your mid-hi-fi category.

Edit: Wow I just looked at my mid-hi-fi list and it's almost all wood. That's funny.

Edit 2: I may end up throwing AD2000s, vintage RS1s, and HF2s in the higher tier soon enough. I'll wait until after the San Mateo meet.

I'd say all of those are capable of being considered HiFi depending on your supportting equipment.

i don't have so much experience but iwould like to give my opinion.

I own hd 600 and have heard hd 800,hd650,k701/k601,ergo amt(and some others less expensive)

I would say that hd 600 can sound like a low-fi,mid-fi,or like hi-fi - hi end, depending the other audio components you pair it with.the same goes for k701.
The hd 800 now,in my opinion is a class above the hd 600/650/k701 although i believe that these can come close to hd 800 if paired very carefully with the right gear. But then again the hd 800 can be noticably better if paired with right gear, too.

But i trully believe that the hd 6** series can give very high quality sound for their prices.

Muddy bass and rolled-off highs is mid-hi-fi now? I guess my 770 pros qualify too.

Although, I think all the phones qualify as what would typically be associated with a "hifi sound" (and indeed almost any phone owned by people on this site probably would). I think the OP has been unclear as to whether he means high-end or hi-fi (given the gap between the R10 and something like the HD650).
All listed are hi-fi. I would only classify two of the ones mentioned as "high end" (I have not heard the HD800 and remain extremely skeptical given the 'new technology!' marketing for something that isnt new at all).
