Because the ownership of said things can be used to build identity.

This is taking it much too far. There are objective qualities to headphones. Headphones aren't tube guitar amplifiers, their purpose is to actually reproduce a certain sound in a very specific way. Now once you get to a certain level of refinement, certainly some personal preference comes into play. But to say that Skullcandy HESH's might be just as good as HD600's, depending on the listener, is patently absurd.

I agree completely. The argument you responded to reminds me of a politically correct grade school teacher who tells their class that "everyone is special in their own special way." That said, however, there is a point of diminishing marginal returns that is based on individual tastes and budget.

Boomana made some very good points. I don't necessarily have the same taste as she does, but I do except the standard phones that which are regarded at the top all belong there.

To me, the HE-90 is in it's own league. That being said there are at least 2 headphones that I enjoy much more. In fact stats in general sound great at first but quickly cause me to lose interest in the way the HD6X0 left me, which was unfulfilled or wanting more, but I don't deny they are all great. Just not for me.

I think most phones can be separated into tiers without much harm, but no ego should be attached and the person that has the K701 or SR60 and enjoys them should not feel in anyway inferior. In fact, they may get just as much enjoyment while the rest of us fools are out a lot more money.

I also agree that Boomana made some good points regarding the whole HiFi Mid Fi debate. I would like to add that based on my observation of of the phones mentioned the K 701 and and RS-1i, that the RS-1 based on my listening preferences would qualify as a HiFi phone and the 701 as maybe MidFi. My critical listening is mostly classical. And in my analysis I compared both phones to my speaker setup in my dedicated room. You can refer to my signature for my speaker, source and equipment details.

If you have some kind of standards then some phones are objectively better. For example if flatter frequency response is better, then objectively we can say one phone is better in that dimension.

Of course if there are no variables to be compared then there is nothing to measure and nothing to be said.
This is not particular to headphones - this applies to everything.

Headphones that get called Hi-Fi should have certain parameters, for example, calling any headphone with more than 0.5% THD Hi-Fi is simply silly. Yes, expensive headphones with bad measurements do exists and people like them and whatnot. They should simply call theirs CC-Fi. Price does not improve headphones.

It's easy to get stuck in our little world, but it's much better to put it all in perspective on most days. I'm going to head outside to listen to my really crappy low-fi radio in my car so I can sing off-key and be very happy.

Happy listening, folks.

okay I am going to be the threadcrapping guy

.

If your cat doesn´t eat the food you bring to him you let him starve until he eats it simple. He is simply not hungry enough if he doesn´t eat food he has eaten before. It works with our cats fine. Sometimes they get tired on the food and hunger strike for a couple of days intensifying their hunt for rats and birds. But eventually they do face the reality eat or die and start eating it again
