Hello Head-fi,

I'm looking for a mid-end and portable headphone within the budget of 350USD-ish~ My definition of mid-end is a little bit high-end but not very high-end, for example I have been looking at Audio-Technica MSR7 and MSR7-SE and also Sony MDR-A1.

The MSR7 fits my tastes quite well with an iPhone 4 source. I'm pretty sensitive to bass and a lot of bass tires me out after 1-2 tracks. Haven't tried the 7SE and the A1, but the MSR7 do sound a bit dry, and I would love added mids. Any other options? I am looking for something quite fashionable and portable to bring around everyday.

Maze 99 classic or neo. They are bassier headphones but it's bass done well.

Hi Cpmsan,

Recommend the following in no particular order :

MSR 7 is a good choice though unless you're after style or can get for the same price or better as the standard MSR 7, MSR 7 SE is basically the same.

Meze 99 Classics also a good choice but keep in mind fit may or may not suit with stock pads, eg wear glasses, large &/or odd shaped ears, I suggest ZMF cowhide pads.

As I'm not in Asia at the moment, not sure the current price but you can check out Oppo PM 3 to compare though depending on preference, narrow front facing sound (stock cable) vs rear wider spacious sound (balanced cable), the balanced cable will push the budget.

Another which may push the budget is Sony 1000X MkII

Always demo with quality sources.

Hope this helps.

Boy, you live in a great place to try out and buy what you are looking for and more.

So assuming your location has not changed (Jakarta, Indonesia, I assume), there are a lot of places to audition and purchase whatever you choose, it here are the three top places I found around Jakarta:

http://jaben-indo.com/index.php?route=common/home#

https://www.headfoniastore.com/#

http://bassaudio.net/

The best thing to do is try out as much as you can before buying. Start at Bass Audio listening to stuff, then go to Jaben Indonesia to see what they have and ask lots of questions about what they have (their website does not list their inventory), and go to the Headfonia Store as the final place, as they have the best prices. From what I see, the Audio Technica ATH-R70x or ATH-M70x would be great for home use and the ATH-WS1100i for portable use at the Headfonia Store meets your budget, but it is really up to you, so do a lot of window shopping before you purchase something.
