I sent an e-mail question to Meze Audio asking them if a new 3rd ear pad will ever be developed to add to the sound alteration of the Meze Empyrean headphones. There is now a leather pad and an alcantara pad. How about a new pad that changes the sound even more toward more detail and brightness? How about a little more bass? Their answer will probably be "no", no plans for more ear pads.

Not saying it's wrong to have your own preferences. But more bass, might as well just have a subwoofer strapped to your head lol
These have a ton of bass imo.
I heard that Meze at one time had prototypes with several tunings for the Empyrean and they brought them to shows. I wonder what those different tunings sounded like?
lol yeah, the Empy has all the (quality!) bass you could ever want.
Empyrean does have great bass but it is still second to the LCD 4z and ab12666. That it is in the same class as those two is great as they are cheaper than them as well.
I've really been thoroughly impressed with Norne's cables. Big improvement over the stock cables and in my experience, both made an evident difference in sound. It's like I said to Trevor... the difference you hear with his cables is not intuitive - it shouldn't sound that much better, but it does for me. The fact that it also is way more ergonomic and has looks that match my headphones is only a bonus.
Will do. Need to give it a few more hours of listening. The color scheme is black with dual metallic silver/copper tracers. Trevor has a design specific to the Empyrean so you could ask him directly about it too.

Vlad from Meze Audio responded back to my e-mail question of a future new ear pad for the Empyreans. He responded, "Yes, in the future there will be a new pad coming out. Not sure what the sound will be like yet, but we are looking to create an ear pad which will give a brighter sound". That woul be a great complement to the other 2 ear pads. I don't mind having an ear pad that makes Empyreans sound like Focal Utopias, which I use to own.

A touch-brighter ear pad for the Empyrean s exactly what I have been hoping for as well. Fantastic news.
I can also confirm all the great things that have been said about the combination of the Empyreans and the Norne Silvergarde S3 that Trevor makes for the Empyreans... a perfect combination for sure. I too got the combination of pure black for one cable pair and black with silver and gold tracers for the second cable pair with an Ebony wood splinter. It really is a thing of beauty. Trevor is indeed responsive, professional and a pleasure to do business with.

I wonder what a flatter Empyrean ear pad would do to the sound? They are very wide compared to the pads of many other brighter sounding headphones. But then that gives the Empyreans more bass and air sound. I asked Vlad if the new ear pads would come out this year

The new earpad is supposed to be voiced between the suede and leather. So it is not going to sound “brighter” than the existing leather.

This is one of the reasons I like to work with Trevor, at Norne, is that he’ll get ahold of headphones and design a tweak cables to bring out there best!
