Its pretty clear they are different drivers(MZ3 vs MZ3se.) Slightly different impedance and sensitivities, different frequency limits on both ends. If I had to guess it would be that we will see an ELITE 2 someday, maybe a year or two?

MEZE ELITE
  • Diaphragm Type: RinaroParus®[MZ3SE]
  • Frequency response: 3 - 112,000 Hz
  • Impedance: 32 Ω
  • Nominal SPL: 101 dB (1mW/1kHz)
MEZE EMPYREAN 2
TypeRinaro Isoplanar® [MZ3]
Active Area4650 mm2
Weight0.16 g
Acoustic Mass10.7 kg/m4
Lower Frequency Limit8 Hz
Upper Frequency Limit110,000 Hz
Frequency Response8 – 110,000 Hz
Impedance32 Ω
Sensitivity105 dB SPL @ 1 V, 1 kHz
Maximum SPL>130 dB
Also different weight and accoustic mass.
It seems to be neither the Empyrean nor the Elite driver, at least not unaltered, since specs differ from both

Nope, the Meze website for the Empyrean 2 says that it uses the MZ3SE driver now. Pictures of the drivers do look like MZ3 though. Who knows...

Interesting, thanks for pointing that out. Its specs are all different from the ELITE drivers though, so I'd assume its a variation, and not the exact same. Or its listed incorrectly on the website, thats also possible.

Who is going to take the plunge and try out the new Duo pads on their Elite?

Peordered Empy II today and shipping is sometime mid-Nov. Definitely trying them out the new duo pads with Elite.

Excellent, looking forward to hearing your impressions. What are your preferred pads with the Elite currently?

Depends on genre, I’m primarily hybrid and swap to angled alcantara for Classical, instrumental, vocals.

Well I will be able to try them with all the Mezes. All the pads on all the flagships.
Lots of Mix and match incoming

I’m excited to hear your impressions as well. There was a hint of pad swapping info in @Currawong’s review, but he really only mentioned how the Hybrid pads sounded on the Empy 2, not how the Duo pads sounded on the Elite.

In my setup, I’m preferring the Angled Alcantara pads for pretty much any music I’m listening to. I posted about it earlier, but there was one track that distinctly let me hear the increased mid-bass clarity of the Angled pads over the Hybrids. Now I can’t go back!

If I can get a hold of some, Id love to, but will wait on some impressions first. I mainly use the hybrid pads with Silver upgrade cable for my tastes so far. The angled pads lack too much low end for my personally most of the time.

I had always enjoyed the Hybrid pads on the Elite and didn't really like the angled but actually the loss of bass I experienced really isn't as bad as I thought and I'm really enjoying the Angled on the Elite now.

I suspect the new Duo pads might be a hit.

It seems like they may be the best of both worlds, only time will tell.

I haven’t used my Hybrid pads for so long that I’ve become fully used to and satisfied by the bass quantity and quality of the Angled Alcantara pads. As a long-time ZMF lover, I know how much difference well-designed pads can make.
