Meze Audio 109 Pro

After a month of self tuition with the fundamentals of my newfound audiophile hobby, I would like to know how the Sennheiser HD 600 fares against the 109 Pro? I’ve already watched Honest Audiophile’s review/comparison among a few others, but I just want to get a general consensus from people who also have experience with both headphones. I’m considering an HD 600, HD 800 S or an Aurorus Borralis as a second set of headphones. I still have much to learn as its only been a month so please bear with me. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

I've switched up my EQ setting and now it's a simple LPF of -2.5 dB @4K and up. This makes the 109 Pro sound similar to a Sennheiser HD-series driver, both in terms of timbre and tuning (more specifically like the HD58X but with better technicalities and bass extension).

how does the sound quality of the 109 pro scale from the different dac/amp devices in front of it? I think they are very easy to drive. Does it sound better if it is used with a balanced cable? How do you clean the ear cushions of the plush?

From experience with unbalanced Vs balanced PCUHD I would have to say that the 109 Pro gives better clarity and gain Vs unbalanced. I have mine on a Kann Max that has 4 gain levels and the 109 Pro outputs better with more power (not like it's bad at low gain)

Between the EF400 and Lyr3 I would not say which one is better. One would say, 109 Pro has from the Lyr3 better technicalities, but then with EF400 you will get that nice sweet and full sound, with not as great width, but with really deep depth. Both are very nice to listen. But then, from Hugo TT2 it is like another world. Technically on another level. Beautiful and expansive soundstage, much more detailed, let's say just much better overall. Only one question I can't answer. Which one is more fun. I like to listen to 109 Pro from any of them. But yes, they will scale with better gear.

They are very easy to drive, but in my opinion, "balanced is better." It helps with the dynamics and imaging and allows them to scale more easily with different gear.

I'd still say with the 109 Pro, it will be a taste/personal preference thing above all else. What kind of synergy are you looking for?

And hopefully less grain.

for the first time I would use it with the main dac-amp device, Violectric dha v590 mk2. maybe I'll buy a 4.4mm cable like this if the imaging, clarity and dynamics are better. https://mezaudio.eu/collections/accessories/products/99-series-silver-plated-upgrade-cables

I think this is overpriced. https://mezaudio.eu/collections/accessories/products/mono3-5mm-pcuhd-silver-plated-premium-cables

For 4.4mm balanced I am using this one at $129 USD.

But the less expensive one at $59 USD works just as well:

I use the 109 balanced with LP W2 131, with Mojo 2 and with my tube amp

I found a great deal on a new HD 600 on Amazon so I just went ahead and bought one along with a 4.4 balanced cable from Audiophile Ninjas so I can find out the sonic differences for myself 😀

The harshness got tamed a little after 300 hrs… perhaps my crappy gear do not synergize well with 109.. I did find my silver cable smooth out the piercing ssss, so I’ll stick with what ever I have for now and save up for a better desktop dac/amp. Ordered the AKG K240 foam tho, see if that will tame the hot treble further…

Same for me, absolutely can’t stand the harshness.
