Meze 99 Neo Discussion + Impressions Thread

I don't know what to make of that.

I didn't hear any distortion across the range actually and the pads are not bad.

If you have any doubts, you can safely go with 99Classics and be happy with them, but 99 Neo works pretty well.

99 Neo needs some break-in and the sound will change after a few hours. I don't recommend judging them before ~10 - ~30 hours have passed of them playing music on higher than volume. I also recommend using music instead of noise.

Meze recommends pink noise for 48 hours

Pink noise:

But I also have other bands that that take a different approach to music

For real though, I use multiple types of noise and music at higher than listening volumes - seems the best method so far.

I had the privilege of testing the 99C and 99N at CanJam SoCal yesterday.
Both, unfortunately, were brand new and NOT burned-in.
I spent 15-20 minutes going back and forth between them.  Both being driven by my FiiO X3-II DAP.
I have used 10 songs or so that I am very familiar with, and could not really point out any difference... until... I played Brothers In Arms (Dire Straights).  There is a very nice and long intro to the song with thunders and rumble. For the first time - I heard a difference between them!!! The 99C sounded deep and thick with body, while the 99N sounded blunt / thin / "dead" / flat.  Switched back and forth several times, and I am sure I could hear that difference every single time.

Was enough for me to buy the 99C.

Again, I understand both needed burn-in, but at identical new state - the 99C sounded better to me!
I also love the walnut wood with either silver or gold trim.  Looks amazing :)

I hope you enjoy your purchase and have fun with them!

My opinion of 99N is still adjusting a bit actually, but I think that both are cool headphones.

While the 99N I have is burning in with pink noise, it could be called a noise box. I left them on their box to burn in, to reduce the amount of noise leaking outside

[/IMG][/IMG]I have received the Meze 99 Neo tour pair and they are rock solidly built and sound fantastic. I think the Neo has a tad more bass and the low mids seem smoother. I have used my Questyle QP1R for walking about. The Neo sounds great the QP1R. And the Neo also sounded great through my different listening rigs. The first rig uses a Tascam CD player hooked to a Yggdrasil to a Liquid Gold or Glass. I was impressed how well the Neo scaled up. My second station uses a Onkyo CD player to a Gungnir multibit to a MJ2 or Liquid Carbon. I feel the Neo likes a good tube amp. I will add pictures and more impressions later this week.

Is it just me, or does the top of the headband say "99 Classics" instead of "99 Neo"?

The Neo is lighter. I guess that wood adds some heft to the design.

Agreed on the tube amp. I tried all my sources and the CDM makes the 99 Neo very dynamic, spacious and authoritative.

On a more serious note.

I take back my words.

99 Neo needs pink noise burn-in to sound good.

I wasn't that impressed with the sound before the burn - in, but now they sound awesome, like really awesome. I understand why my first impressions were so positive back then when I first tested 99 Neo in Bucharest. They sound awesome with some burn-in. Also, do yerselves a favor and use pink noise and for a few hours. IT helps a lot with instrument separation, detail and general refinement of the sound.

Whenever I'm not using it, I've had my Neo plugged into the Opus#1, running a continuous loop of pink noise. I don't know how many hours it's taken in, but I believe it's over 48. So tonight I'll call it finished with burn-in and start treating them normal again.

I do feel it's helped with vocal clarity, and maybe given a little back to the treble.
