Meze 99 Classics Discussion + Impressions Thread

I think it's the same person based on their Reddit picture/username.

I'm pretty close to getting the Dekoni pads. I have a hard time swallowing $60 USD (on sale) pads for headphones I paid $250 for, but I plan on using these for closed back on the go listening as well as for work meetings (getting the Meze boom mic cable), so any improvement is probably worth it.

Very observant! Quite more so than I was. Sorry, I stand corrected on that.

I see your point about cost. I paid full $79 for the Dekoni pads and my Meze 99 Noir were $199. Comfort is what initially drove me to buy them as I liked the Meze 99 sound but the my ears touched the drivers. So I went for them and was beyond pleased with the comfort improvement but noticed significantly the change in the midbass bump. Their frequency response graphs show it and it was clearly audible as well.

Today I took possession of a pair of 99 Noir and immediately put on a pair of Dekoni Sheepskin.

Now, I’m using high rez 50’s/60’s Jazz files into a DACMagic 100 into either a Little Dot LD1+ or Little Dot mkii, just for reference.

First off, I can’t get over how beautiful these cans are. The build and wood are just gorgeous and they fit perfectly around my ears. Absolutely no discomfort at all. The Dekoni pads were recommended, which is cool because I already use Sheepskins on my Beyerdynamics. These sheepskins keep a really good distance from the driver and as my others, hold shape really well and are just the most comfortable pads.

Bass cannons? Those cannons must be hidden because I can’t find them. The bass is present perfectly in the mix and well defined and goes deep and I find absolutely no bleeding into the mids at all. In fact, I am going to say that these Noir’s sound very balanced from top to bottom with a not over done, but healthy midrange. Detail retrieval is good and my lord does the percussion just stand out so real. I am really impressed. Reading so much had me a bit worried, but they aren’t even burned in and I can say they are keepers!

Got the Dekoni Sheepskin pads for mine. I think these are keepers. Lacking in technicalities like soundstage and imaging, but the comfort, sound, and seal improved with the Dekoni pads. Everything sounds correct, though nothing wows, other than a really good midbass impact on bass drums. Now to replace this crappy 3.5mm cable.

At this point I am 100% certain that the Noirs received the same silent revision as the Classics. The bass is just wonderfully present and very balanced.
