Meze 99 Classics Discussion + Impressions Thread

Kudos and how generous are you, awesome setup for the little brother!

I never liked the 99s directly out of the Dual Sense controller so I assume he plugs in and out of the jack on the back of the TV. The worst thing Sony did was to remove the Toslink port from the console. I realize it's ancient tech and doesn't support all the newer audio formats but it was easy and convenient when hooking up external DACs, headphones or desktop speakers. And now trying to find a decent quality HDMI 2.1 audio extractor that supports all the features of the PS5 Pro is not cheap or easy. Whose brilliant idea was it to stuff everything onto the HDMI port anyway. :expressionless:
I hear you, buddy , 300%

I've always been an enthusistic of sound but didnt have enough money to afford hi-fi (sounds familiar? XD )... it was not untill recent years that I started to "invest" more in this hobby. Even with the PS2 I was mind blow by the step up on quality using the optical output compared with the sound coming from the L+R of the components cable. That day I was like: WOW! I should have done this before, what a waste of time all of those years :(

When it comes to gaming, besides the classics, I've always been a fan of japanese music videogames since 2001. One of the parameters that is crucial to fully enjoy these games is the amount of lag. The best way to reduce it is using the optical output of the console.

From Ps2 fat I moved to ps4 pro. Ps3 was the console I couldnt play because of....life XD I started to work, changes, and mostly because Konami stop the production of "my type" of videogames for PS.

Immediately I used the optical output but I had to sell it. The ps4 pro, as many of us know, has a jet engine as a cooler fan inside xD it was too noisy, even with the "tooth paste" replaced. I bought an xbox X and surprise: THERE IS NO OPTICAL OUTPUT!!!!

Surprisingly, the lag from OLED LG tvs is very very low, due to their emphasis on gaming tvs.

The controller....the default controller....oh my good, the audio was terrible. I used 3 different controllers, some of them almost 200€ and it was the same crappy sound.

I sold my xbox because my heart has always been with PC and PS, and because the ps5 pro was about to be released. And surprise again: no optical output from the console and poor quality from the gamepads.

Answering your question: yes, my brother uses the 3.5mm output from the LGC3. Even his untrained ears can notice a big difference between the gamepads and the tv.

As for me, I have to use yes or yes the optical from my tv (LG G4) because it has NO LINE OUTPUT LOL

Which balanced cable do you use in your 99 Classic?
Hi, buddy.

I've tried a couple and decided to keep the original from meze, because they were cheap hehehe

I also have to say something about the cables: I've done multiple blind tests with balance and unbal (default) cables and the quality of sound is 100% the same. I couldnt hear any differences, any subtleties. The only difference was the power, the volume.

Let's say you take a ferrum wandla + OOR to run the tests with the classics 99: the bal and unbal outputs from the amp is going deliver exactly the same sound.

Classics 99, they don't need the bal cable. Save yourself that money and spend it on beers with your friends, seriously xD

This meze model has a low impedance and the only and ONE AND ONLY reason to use a bal cable with them would be in the case that you have no option. Lets say, the amp doesnt have an unbal jack...or in the worst case scenario: you're using a device with 2 different outputs and the unbal is giving not enough "volume" so you'll have to use the balanced one.

Hi guys,

I have new Meze 99 Classics and I'm very impressed with sound what it produces, BUT ...

I know that it has microphonic headband or other metal parts etc. I knew about it before my purchase and I took it into account. But I have met with a little bit different problem.

I have tried to find anything about my problem in the thread, but I was unsuccessful even using search feature. There are really a lot of posts here.

If I rotate/move with one of the wooden ear cups, it generates really loud annoying creaking noise. And it does not matter whether I rotate with it in horizontal or vertical direction or whether I rotate with it just a little bit or more. Almost any movement of this problematic ear cup generates this creaking noise. And try to imagine what happens if I have the headphones on the head in the moment when it happens.

It's interesting that the second ear cup is absolutely silent. I can do anything with it and it doesn't make any noise, it's simply silent.

So, it seems that this noisy ear cup has some problem.

Is there anybody with the such or similar problem? Could you help me?

Thank you!

Buddy, I've had 3 and still 2 of them with me. I even sometimes dance with them on and I can asure you that what you have is not normal. No cracking noises on both cups. Contact with your provider/store. They have to help you if you're still on garantee

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Yes, to contact store will be the best option in this case. And sure, it's still under warranty, it's new, I bought it just a few days ago.

BTW, if you want to hear how it creaks, here's short video.

Bah, i sold my meze 99 to a friend of mine a while back. But now i miss it. I have the sivga robin now but the meze was just more engaging. Not analytical or anything but just very enjoyable to jam out with.
I did use dekoni earpads and that for me made it loose some of its magic.
So perhaps next time i will have to try it with silver upgrade cable and small stock pads instead.
What i do like about the robin is that the drivers are not so close to the ears and the headband has more padding.
Greetings, Anouk,

Hello again,
I am in the market for a closed headphone for max 500 euro new or second hand. The meze 99 classic is number one right now but has anyone been able to compare it to the focal azurys? I have never owned a focal headphone before and the price seems interesting.
Thanks in advance for any info
Greetings, Anouk,
