Meze 99 Classics Discussion + Impressions Thread

On the picture it looks like you have bigger pads on them, optical illusion probably.

I can't get used to the default pads because my ears are getting squashed against the drivers;). But the Brainwavz pads help. When putting something between the pads so that they don't get as flat when using them also helps.

I've no idea whether they're bigger, but they do feel a bit different while being worn

I dunno....I've been doing A/B testing on the V1 and V2 pads. Is it wrong to like the V2 pads a bit more than the V1 ones? I kinda like the slightly more spacious sound of the V2 pads even with the extra bass.

I've been extremely satisfied with those pads, so why not like them?

I don't think I would had liken a smaller pad solely because my ears are pretty big and any smaller pads would have not been able to fit or enable the same amount of comfort...

Yeah they are quite shallow so I can understand why people had issues with the V1 pads.

Here's another tidbit that I just discovered: Having the V1 pads on gives you a similar soundstage to the Oppo PM-3. Obviously not the same, but very close to my ears. It's like the Meze 99C is like your music on a sugar high versus the Oppo's polite and rational behavior. Once again I'll confirm it again: neither headphone to me is better than the other. Each is its own flavor of sound and it's up to the individual to decide which pair works best. Fortunately a lot of you have both anyway so no worries right?

I don't have P-3

I try to have only one headphone and one IEM at a time since I only have one head and one pair of ears

At this very moment, my setup is 99C EQ'ed + ie800 + FiiO X5-2 . I'm pretty happy with the setup although I vastly would prefer X7 + AM3 over X5-2

I love my 99Cs - was just looking at the 12 classics for when I'm walking the dog. Does anyone have both? Would be interested in a sound comparison!

I loaned them. But they are nowhere near the 99 classics. Not as transparent and the lower midrange is the worst part of the earbuds. But they are not bad, just not a 99c in earbuds.

Cool, thanks for that - kinda what I expected given the price, but nice to get an opinion from someone who's heard both!

Cheers jstps.

Oops.

I have a horrible feeling I'm getting carried away now!

What started as a simple effort to find replacement phones for my HD650s which I can't use in the open office space, led me to the Meze 99s..  and a uDac3..  and a NuForce HA-200 headphone amplifier..

and I've just pressed the button on a shiny new Audiolab M-Dac+ which should be here tomorrow..

Which was picked because of the nice 'next upgrade' path to get another HA-200 and use the balanced outputs from the Dac for a true balanced monoblock solution..

So Meze, if you could hurry up with that balanced cable option, that would be just great!!  ;)

It's been a seriously expensive couple of months.  I was worried as to whether this was overkill for the relatively inexpensive Meze 99s, but I've never regretted having a great source and good amplification as the priority.

The 99s are settling in nicely now, the bass is definitely more controlled than when new. This morning was a Leftfield sort of a morning, and 'Melt' wound up nice and loud just sounded fantastic.  I'm really looking forward to what the new DAC will bring to the table..

Still need to sell the HD650s though! I'll wait til the new dac is here, and maybe bundle the little uDAC 3 with them.

Just a note, and this should not come as a surprise, but if you're ordering anything directly from Meze, don't hold your breath.  I'm in the US (NY).  I ordered a cable two weeks ago and it hasn't left Romania yet.

This is not a complaint, just an observation and an alert to any prospective shoppers.

Hate quoting myself. This is a bit messed up. the cable arrived today (good); their tracking notices suck (bad).  The cable appears to be brand new, as it should (good), but for **** sake, they are the old style that still has the fabric above the split!

Meze, I hope you're reading this.  you're going to get an angry email from me in either case. The picture on the website very clearly shows no fabric on this part of the cable.

I've bought the 99c Classics last week and the supplied cable was the newest one without the fabric. I think you're unlucky.

To be clear, I bought a used set of Maple cans a few weeks ago.  They came with the older cable.  I saw that Meze offers the newer cable on their website, so I ordered one ($20).  They sent me the old cable.

Unlucky??????   No, they screwed up my order and should make it right.  I sent an email, let's see what they do.
