Excuse me for reviving an old thread, but it seems better than starting a new one.
I got some Quart Phone 85s today. Really nice!
Obviously they're flawed in that they simply give up on any non acoustic bass, but for acoustic music they're super. So they're obviously specialised cans.
The open transparent presentation is very interesting, and they're unbelievably comfortable.
The foam in the pads had obviously lost a fair bit of their puff and were not holding the phones far enough from my ear, so I took the pads off, put some polythene sheet on the sticky back and cut along the back of the pads, a bit longer than an inch along the longer side, and put in some supplemental stuffing under the original foam (polyester lofting, like cotton wool). The polythene sheet prevents the lofting from sticking to the sticky back of the pads whilst stuffing and ensures that the cut couldn't run and ruin the pads, and is very easily removed leaving the pad backs nice and sticky. This did the job nicely, and the comfort is made perfect, and tone is a little better too.
