You have to understand the cultural differences related to sexuality in Japan. In Japan, sex is viewed as a bodily need that just needs to be satisfied. Thus, it's basically acceptable for a man to have sex on the side rather than with his wife. When viewed in that light, this kind of love doll thing is not as socially unacceptable or as shocking as it would be in the west. All he's doing is satisfying his "base" sexual needs.

Must...Put...Headphones...On...Every...DOLL.

And different cans on each doll of course, to match their winning and unique personalities...

Must use the "Headphone Musume" Dojin site as a reference...

You know, it really doesn't seem that weird to me. It's really just high-tech masturbation.

You make a good point, except the quotes he makes seems to include other needs, no?

That was my first thought. The second one was "does having a 'relationship' with realistic body parts and decapited dolls, etc. encourage or discourage future plans."

He's "unable to love" real women. He prefers the dolls as they won't cheat. You sure that's all it is?

I don't see any difference between his hobbies and other doll/Action figure collecting hobbies. For the money spent though, isn't he better off getting an 'escort' instead.

Whatever makes you happy. It doesn't seem like anyone else is getting hurt because of his hobby/lifestyle, and from his income it seems like he's being a productive member of society. Just let him be.

There is a difference between this and collecting headphones.

There is a market for used headphones...

The interesting thing is that 40 years ago in Japan, he wouldn't have even been expected to love real women. You were expected to get married, and you got married because society expected you to, not necessarily because you had love for the person you married. That expectation is still true (in fact, him being unmarried is probably more socially unacceptable in Japan then owning the dolls), though social attitudes about love have and are changing. The closest parallel I can draw is with homosexuality in Japan; most homosexual Japanese of that man's age maintain heterosexual marriages due to social expectation.

For a related twist to this story that illustrates some of this, it's worth reading about Enjo Kosai:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enjo_k%C5%8Dsai
About 15% of Japanese high school girls participate in this, and most of their customers are married Japanese men. It's not considered as shocking as it would be in the west.
