Hi,

I've listened to the following two setup and can't hear big difference when turning bass off on E10. Does this mean the Macbook pro's sound card is almost as good as the external E10?

1. Macbook Pro --> E10 --> Senn HD 598
2. Macbook Pro --> Senn HD 598

Update:
Tried with a little Philips she3580, the E10 upgrades the cheap earbud with richer and thicker sound, which is very pleasant to hear.
After a few day's burning in, I still find the valueadd to hd598 from e10 with bass off is subtle to listen to classical. But the added bass is pretty natural and to me it improves listening to pop music clearly.

Not surprised, but don't you find the 598 better with the bass boost? If so, you have that.

Thanks for the reply grokit. I indeed find the bass boost changed the sound prominently, but as I mostly listen to classics and sometimes pop but rarely rock or r&b, the bass boost is more unbalancing than improving the sound to my ears...

Any other budget DAC/AMP I should consider to pair with my hd 598 for my music portfolio?

Thanks.

No I don't have any direct experience with that headphone, although I've always admired its looks. I would find the thread with the most posts on it and scan through them, there's bound to be some consensus on what matches up well.

It is quite interesting that lots of our Chinese user very happy about our amps with HD598. I guess it is because HD598 is not belong to either hard to drive or easy to drive headphone.

I've never been impressed with the DACs in Apple laptops - too much machine noise and a muffled appearance.

in an iMac they are suitable for ~64ohms but I'm pretty sure the MBP's and Airs are suitable for ~32ohms which should equate to volume and ability to drive them

My work pro sounds infinitely nicer through a cheapo usb dac (literally a £2 one) as it seems to drive them better, same goes for my Air.

With the DAC my 558's sound much less muted and have a fuller range especially when using my e5 along with it.
