I've had the M50's and 440's for a while now. It was not until recently that I realized I could fit the 440 pads on the M50's. I think you'll find the results favorable. In my opinion the stock M50 pads are very cramped (perhaps I just have big ears...) and the 440 pads offered what felt like a relief from this. Sound quality wise, I felt these pads really "opened up" these cans. I'm still learning the lingo here so excuse my sucky descriptions of sound. I believe what I'm trying to say is that the 440 pads opened up the soundstage. Anyways, hope you all enjoy this.

Sure do. I just sold my 440's (and thus sold the pads too) so I ordered the 840 pads. These are a hell of a lot more comfortable. Sound quality wise, I'm not sure whether I prefer the 440 or the 840 pads, as I sold the 440 pads before I had a chance to compare them. Anyway, I digress.

These are the 840 pads on the M50's. I should note that both the 440 and 840 pads fit a little bit loose on the M50's, but hardly so. They don't slip off or anything, just rotate fairly easily. I don't find it to be a problem.

 
And, finally, these are the 840 pads v. the M50 pads (notice how cracked and stiff the M50 pads have become over time).

This may be a stretch but could you (or anyone) tell me if the 840 pads compare to the Bose around the ear pads. I used to own the Bose and loved how they felt. My new M50s sound infinitely better than the Bose but I find myself missing the comfort of the Bose. I agree with you OP on the M50s feeling cramped. So anyways, if anyone could help me out I would be greatly appreciative!

$15.50 with free shipping @ sweetwater. Has anyone tried both these pads and the velour pads that people were using on m50s?  I would like to see a direct comparison from someone that has experience with both.  Also to the op, what difference did you see in comfort between the 440 and 840 pads? The 440 pads cost around half as much.

I tried using Beyer DT250 velour pads on the M50, and it was pretty uncomfortable because the DT250 pads are somewhat firm. Paired with the M50 clamping, it was not a pleasing feeling.
 
The DT250 pads work well with my V6 though.

The 440 pads are very rigid pads. I'll even go as far as to call them stiff. The 840 pads, however, feel much softer, like the inside of the pad is made of some kind of tempurpedic mattress material. Comfort wise I'd go with 840.

Got my 840 pads in today, they are quite a bit more comfortable and I agree they do seem to expand the soundstage a bit.  Sweetwater was a pleasure to deal with.

The shure 840 pads could be the best earpads ever made, they sound great on a vast array of other brands outside of sure.
