Lyrics that rock.

This song just gives a new twist on the "I'll be this for you..." ... you gotta love it

Postal Service - Brand New Colony

I'll be the grapes fermented,
Bottled and served with the table set in my finest suit
Like a perfect gentlemen

I'll be the fire escape that's bolted to the ancient brick
Where you will sit and contemplate your day

I'll be the waterwings that save you if you start drowning
In an open tab when your judgement's on the brink

I'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite
Albums back as your lying there drifting off to sleep...

I'll be the platform shoes and undo what heredity's done to you...
You won't have to strain to look into my eyes

I'll be your winter coat buttoned and zipped straight to the throat
With the collar up so you won't catch a cold

I want to take you far from the cynics in this town,
And kiss you on the mouth.
We'll cut out bodies free from the tethers of this scene,
Start a brand new colony
Where everything will change,
We'll give ourselves new names (identities erased)
The sun will heat the grounds,
Under our bare feet in this brand new colony
Everything will change, oOo oOo...

The second verse of "Given to Fly" by Pearl Jam really does it for me. It can be applied to so many things...human sacrifice, Christianity/religion, resilience, and just basically giving it all up for others. Overall, I think Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder have penned some wonderful lyrics over the years, this is just the highlight of them for me:

Quote:

he floated back down cause he wanted to share
his key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere
but first he was stripped, and then he was stabbed
by faceless men, well screwers...he still stands
and he still gives his love, he just gives it away;
the love he recieves is the love that is saved
and sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky
a human being that was given to fly...

i always loved robert nanna's work with braid, fiction, hey mercedes, and city on film. this piece is from hey mercedes' que shiraz. read it. love it.

Quote:

Apart from being devilishly dressed / In tune to the t / You tumble at me / Angellically delicate. / But I could be handsome / If you'd only pull the curtain / And we could be brilliant / If you'd only chance uncertain. / But how long can I smile / Before I realize / My head will never be the same again. / You're smiling like New Jersey on its side / I'm glued to the seat and / Honestly I can't dream of anything better. / But I could be handsome / If you'd only pull the curtain / And is it so tragic / To think that we never happened. / But how far can you drive / Before you realize / Your head will never be the same again. / And the color bars go / Que shiraz. / How long can we fight / Before we realize / We won't be the same. / And the color bars go / Que shiraz / Tell me where you are.

Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister

Quote:

Anthony walked to his death because he thought he'd never feel this way again
If he goes back to the house then things would go from bad to worse, what could he do?
He wants to remember things exactly as he left them on that FUNNY DAY
And if there is something else beyond, he isn't scared because
It's bound to be less boring than today
It's bound to be less boring than tomorrow

Hilary WENT to her death because she couldn't think of anything to say
Everybody thought that she was boring, so they never listened anyway
Nobody was really saying anything of interest, she fell asleep
She was into S&M and bible studies
Not everyone's cup of tea she would admit to me
Her cup of tea, she would admit to no one
Her cup of tea, she would admit to me
Her cup of tea, she would admit to no one

Hilary went to the Catholic Church because she wanted information
The vicar, or whatever, took her to one side and gave her confirmation
Saint Theresa's calling her, the church up on the hill is looking lovely
But it DIDN'T interest, the only things she wants to know is
How and why and WHEN and WHERE to go
How and why and WHEN and WHERE to follow
How and why and WHEN and WHERE to go
How and why and WHEN and WHERE to follow

But if you are feeling sinister
Go off and see a minister
He'll try in vain to take away the pain of being a hopeless unbeliever

When she got back, her spirituality was thrown into confusion
So she got a special deal on renting
From the man at Rediffusion
"Look at me! I'm on TV
It makes up for the shortcomings of being poor
Now I'm in a million pieces", picked up for deliberation
By the people listening at home
By the people watching on the telly
By the people listening at home
By the people watching on the telly

But if you are feeling sinister
Go off and see a minister
Chances are you'll probably feel better
If you stayed and played with yourself

suprised no one mentioned tenacious d's tribute
Quote:

This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,
we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.
And he said:

"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul."

Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,
and we each said... "Okay."

And we played the first thing that came to our heads,
Just so happened to be,
The Best Song in the World, it was The Best Song in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three,
It was destiny.
Once every hundred-thousand years or so,
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow...

Needless to say, the beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his whoopy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us: "Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
Rock!
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World, yea, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was the best mutha****** song the greatest song in the world.

Hohhohahhahh
Fli Tugigugigup Gi Fligufligugigup Uh Fligugigup Uh Di Oh Gugugup Gi Fligufligugigugi Flilibili Ah Fliguwamanama Lucifer

And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound
anything like this song.

This is just a tribute! You gotta believe me!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, ****! Good God, God lovin',
So surprised to find you can't stop it.

O hallelujah I'm found! Rich mother****** aaaaah!
All right! All right

This part from Billy Idol`s "Rebel Yell" always gets me ticking.

I walked the ward with you, babe
A thousand miles with you
I dried your tears of pain, babe
A million times for you

I'd sell my soul for you babe
For money to burn with you
I'd give you all, and have none, babe
Just, just, justa, justa to have you here by me
Because

First off, lyrics that truly rock...

S.O.D. - Milano Mosh
Quote:

You think that you're really hard
You think that you can mosh
You got your suspenders and got your boots
You better wear armor, you screwing fool

WE MOSH until we die
WE MOSH until you fry
You think that you can try
But can you do... the Milano Mosh

And now some lyrics that I've always thought to be quite funny.

Pantera - Walk
Quote:

Can't you see I'm easily bothered by persistence
One step from lashing out at you
You want in to get under my skin
And call yourself a friend
I've got more friends like you
What do I do?

[Pre]
Is there no standard anymore?
What it takes, who I am, where I've been
Belong
You can't be something you're not
Be yourself, by yourself
Stay away from me
A lesson learned in life
Known from the dawn of time

[Chorus]
Re-spect
Walk
What do you say?
Re-spect
Walk
Are you talking to me?

Run your mouth when I'm not around
It's easy to achieve
You cry to weak friends that sympathize
Can you hear the violins playing your song?
Those same friends tell me your every word

[Pre]

[Chorus]

Are you talking to me?
No way punk

"Dead Man's Will" by Calexico & Iron And Wine...

Quote:

Give this stone to my brother, cause we found it playing in the barnyard many years ago
Give this bone to my father, he'll remember hunting in the hills when I was ten years old
May my love reach you all, I lost it in myself and buried it too long
Now that I've come to fall, please say it's not too late now that I'm dead and gone

Give this string to my mother, it pulled the baby teeth she keeps inside the drawer
Give this ring to my lover, I was scared and stupid not to ask for her hand long before
May my love reach you all, I lost it in myself and buried it too long
Now that I've come to fall, please say it's not too late now that I'm dead and gone

Wire's "Map Ref. 41°N 93°W"

An unseen ruler defines with geometry
An unrulable expanse of geography
An aerial photographer over-exposed
To the cartologist's 2D images knows
The areas where the water flowed
So petrified, the landscape grows
Straining eyes try to understand
The works, incessantly in hand
The carving and paring of the land
The quarter square, the graph divides
Beneath the rule a country hides

Interrupting my train of thought
Lines of longitude and latitude
Define and refine my altitude

The curtain's undrawn
Harness fitted, no escape
Common and peaceful, duck, flat, lowland
Landscape, canal, cannard, water colored

Crystal palaces for floral kings
A widespread waving span of wings
Witness the sinking of the sun
A deep breath of submission has begun

Interrupting my train of thought
Lines of longitude and latitude
Define and refine my altitude

I would submit that those are lyrics that suck, rather than rock.

Death cab for cutie - "What Sarah said"

And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU that reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breathes as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak of the LCD took you a little farther away from me

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines in a place where we only say goodbye
It stung like a violent wind that out memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds
But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the TV entertained itself

'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous pacers bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round and everyone will lift their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said that "Love is watching someone die"

So who's going to watch you die?..

thanks for your constructive post!

actually i guess it is constructive in that the lyrics were repeated for others to read.

perhaps an example of lyrics that, in your humble opinion, "rock"... ?
