Lyrics that rock.

I'm Cold beer, hot wings
Wranglers, Skoal ring
Get just what you see
Gun rack, ball cap
Don't take no crap
Ain't a pretty boy-toy
I'll rock you steady
Rough and ready - Trace Adkins

His eyes are cold and restless
His wounds have almost healed
And she’d give half of texas
Just to change the way he feels
She knows his love’s in tulsa
And she knows he’s gonna go
Well, it ain’t no woman, flesh and blood
It’s that damned old rodeo.

(chorus)
Well, it’s bulls and blood
It’s dust and mud
It’s the roar of a sunday crowd
It’s the white in his knuckles
The gold in the buckle
He’ll win the next go ’round
It’s boots and chaps
It’s cowboy hats
It’s spurs and latigo
It’s the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo. - Garth Brooks

love radiohead lyrics

for example my iron lung
Quote:

Faith, you're driving me away
You do it everyday
You don't mean it
But it hurts like hell

My brain says I'm receiving pain
A lack of oxygen
From my life support
My iron lung

We're too young to fall asleep
To cynical to speak
We are losing it
Can't you tell?

We scratch our eternal itch
A twentieth century bitch
And we are grateful for
Our iron lung

The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon
The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon

Suck, suck your teenage thumb
Toilet trained and dumb
When the power runs out
We'll just hum

This, this is our new song
Just like the last one
A total waste of time
My iron lung
The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon
The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon

And if you're frightened
You can be frightened
You can be, it's OK
And if you're frightened
You can be frightened
You can be, it's OK

The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon

you'll need the whole story though to interpretate them correctly

actually i guess it is constructive in that the lyrics were repeated for others to read.

perhaps an example of lyrics that, in your humble opinion, "rock"... ?

Oh, come now - what is the harm in submiting his own opinions? He's not putting somebody down for liking them!

I think he's right - and I think hardly any of the lyrics here posted have been truly representative as "rocking". I think that many/most of these lyrics posted contain little to no poetic devices and exhibit pretty sophmoric rhyming schemes. I think Radiohead is a great example, for me, of overrated lyrics, that people feel "superior" for liking. Trust me, if you submited some of these works to your English teacher, she'd flunk them!

Of course, for political-correctness' sake, all in my opinion!

there's no harm at all, because it's a silly thread in a silly forum. fun, but silly.

i take the OP's connotation of "rocking" as the opposite of "sucking." but in the more constructionist view of "rocking," you're right, none of these lyrics truly "rock." For that, one must turn to the likes of Quiet Riot.

i COMPLETELY agree with you, which is why i find the whole exercise to be silly, and why i posted Dada/absurdist lyrics as my choice. the same with the lyrics in my sig.

basically, with VERY few exceptions, rock lyrics simply SUCK without music. often even WITH music.

screw that, it's a HARD FACT.

Steve Hogarth of Marillion is like a walking lyrics-that-rock factory:

Quote:

Beyond You excerpt:

And the feeling comes in waves
A hole in my body, aching
Like a heart dying
A soul crying
Exhausted and insecure
Took all you have and I still want more
So I reach out to hold you
But all I do is hurt you
Hurt you

I can't live with myself
I can't live with myself
Can't take no help
I try to want to
But I can't get beyond you

If I was a child I would take you and run
And I say I don't know... But I know
And I say I'll go

You just spent the whole day
Driving away

Quote:

The Great Escape excerpt:

Just when I thought I'd seen the last of you
You come here scratchin' at my door
Your pain and anger's in the howling dark
Of every corridor I walk

So tell me more about the love that you rejected
Tell me more about the trust you disrespected
I still don't know, why did you hurt the very one
Why did you hurt the very one
That you should have protected?

Anger, he smiles, towering in
Shiny metallic Purple armour
Queen jealousy, envy waits behind him
Hey firey Green gown sneers at the grassy ground
Blue are the life giving waters taken for granted
They quietly understand
Once happy Turquoise armies lay opposite ready
But wonder why the fight is on.

Bikini Kill's White Boy:

Quote:

White Boy: "I don't think it's a problem because most of the girls ask for it."
Kathleen: "Uh-huh, and how do they ask for it?"
White Boy: "They way the act, they way they... I can't say the way they dress because that's an own personal choice. Some dumb ho-- butt-rocker bitch walking down the street, they're asking for it and they deny it, but it's true."

Lay me spread eagle down on your hill, yeah,
Then I'll book about how I wanted to die
It's hard to talk with your dick in my mouth!
I will try to scream in pain a little nicer next time.

White Boy,
Don't laugh
Don't cry

JUST DIE

I'm so sorry if I'm alienating some of you
You're whole ********* culture alienates me
I cannot scream in pain from down here on my knees
I'm so sorry that I think.

White Boy,
Don't laugh
Don't cry

JUST DIE

He's not putting somebody down, but you are. Please don't.

We can argue good, better, best till we're blue in the face and nothing will be solved. Opinions are just that, opinions. Song lyrics, like poetry, often require interpretation by the listener/reader. Since all interpretations aren't identical and all opinions aren't identical, of course there's going to be polarized perceptions of both lyrics that rock and lyrics that suck. So far in this thread there's been choices I agree with, choices I disagree with, and a couple I don't relate to nor understand ... so I can't even comment on them.

Lets not criticize and get into a pissing match over each other's selections. Every thread doesn't have to end in an argument. Please.

Don't worry, I think Robyn Hitchcock rules too. "My wife, and my Dead Wife. Am I the only one that sees her?" or "I wish I was a pretty girl, so I could wreck myself in the shower." or "Balloon Man Blew Up In My Mind..."

tom waits

9th & Hennepin

Well it's Ninth and Hennepin
All the doughnuts have names that sound like prostitutes
And the moon's teeth marks are on the sky
Like a tarp thrown all over this
And the broken umbrellas like dead birds
And the steam comes out of the grill
Like the whole ******* town's ready to blow...
And the bricks are all scarred with jailhouse tattoos
And everyone is behaving like dogs
And the horses are coming down Violin Road
And Dutch is dead on his feet
And all the rooms they smell like diesel
And you take on the dreams of the ones who have slept here
And I'm lost in the window, and I hide in the stairway
And I hang in the curtain, and I sleep in your hat...
And no one brings anything small into a bar around here
They all started out with bad directions
And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear
"One for every year he's away", she said
Such a crumbling beauty, ah
There's nothing wrong with her that a hundred dollars won't fix
She has that razor sadness that only gets worse
With the clang and the thunder of the Southern Pacific going by
And the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet
'til you're full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin
And you spill out over the side to anyone who will listen...
And I've seen it all, I've seen it all
Through the yellow windows of the evening train...

Tool was mentioned before and here is only one example of their excellent lyrics:

Schism

I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed
Will set two lovers' souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes
Testing our communication
The light that feuled our fire then
Has a burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end
Crippling our communication

I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame
It doesn't mean I don't desire to
Point the finger, blame the other
Watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together
Rediscover communication

The poetry
That comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance

There was a time that the pieces fit
But I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know
The dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow
And strengthen our communication

Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed brothers
Between supposed lovers

I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit

Binary Star.. Can't remeber the song name and I'm not on my home comp to look it up, but if you go to One Be Lo's website you can download it all for free anyways

"You see alphabetically, I'm coming after you(U) like the letter V"

isn't that crazy in more than one way?!?!
