PJ Harvey's The Darker Days Of Me And Him

Quote:

I pick up the peices
and carry on somehow
tape the broken parts together
limp this love around.

I will post more later.

by Robyn Hitchcock:

Uncorrected personality traits
that seem whimsical in a child
may prove to be ugly
in a fully grown adult.

Lack of involvement with the father,
or over-involvement with the mother,
can result in lack of ability to relate to sexual fears,
and in homosexual leanings, narcissism, transexuality
(girls from the waist up, men from the waist down),
attempts to be your own love object.
Reconcile your parents to you
by becoming both at once!

Even Marilyn Monroe was a man,
but this tends to get overlooked
by our mother-fixated,
overweight, sexist media.

So:
Uncorrected personality traits
that seem whimsical in a child
may prove to be ugly
in a fully grown adult.

If you give in to them
Every time they cry
They will become little tyrants
But they won't remember why

Then when they are thwarted
By people in later life
They will become psychotic
And they won't make an ideal husband or wife

The spoiled baby grows into
the escapist teenager who's
the adult alcoholic who's
the middle-aged suicide. (Oy.)

So:
Uncorrected personality traits
that seem whimsical in a child
may prove to be ugly
in a fully grown adult.

This voice-over intro line from the song "Jealous of Youth" by The The was a badly needed wake-up call for me.

"It's funny how, as we grow old
We cling to the past as we cling to the air
And feel nostalgia for things that were ..... maybe never there"

A bit in Dream Theater's A Change of Seasons:

"I'm sick of all you hypocrites
Holding me at bay
And I don't need your sympathy
To get me through the day
Seasons change and so can I
Hold on Boy,
No time to cry
Untie these strings, I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away"

Absolutely anything at all by The Magnetic Fields (or any of Stephin Merritt's other bands).

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Counting Down The Hours:

As I'm walking toward tomorrow with a rifle in my hand
And I'm thinking about New England, and I'm missing old Japan
And a mountain in California where a spring runs hot and cold
And if I told you I felt ageless, would you tell me I'm not old?

British Sea Power, Oh Larsen B:

You're fractured and cold but your heart is unbroken
My favourite, foremost coastal antarctic shelf
Oh Larsen B, oh you can fall on me
Oh Larsen B, desalinate the barren sea

Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element

"Once he had forests and mountains
That were only his - listening to him
Once he would run through the summer days
Catching memories for ages to come
Now he is dressing this naked floor
With his flesh and blood, and times passes by
His trade of pain might just have lead him
To deal with consequence
For some change as time passes by"

The perfect part of the perfect song from the perfect album.

Rush's "Cygnus X-1"

"Cygnus X-1, Book One: The Voyage"

[Prologue:]
In the constellation of Cygnus, there lurks a mysterious, invisible force: the black hole
of Cygnus X-1...

Six Stars of the Northern Cross
In mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night...

[1]
Invisible to telescopic eye
Infinity, the star that would not die

All who dare to cross her course
Are swallowed by her fearsome force

Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized...at the core?
Or through the Astral Door?
To soar...

[2]
I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way
On my ship, the 'Rocinante'
Wheeling through the galaxies
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the black hole
Gains control...

[3]
Spinning, whirling
Still descending
Like a spiral sea
Unending...

Sound and fury
Drown my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart...

To be continued...

The music rocks too. The Rickenbacker bass sound is hair-raising.

Probably because it's easier to get a consensus on bad things than on good things.

A few lyrical geniuses in the fields of rock n' roll:

Bob Dylan - Idiot Wind (excerpt)
Quote:

I woke up on the roadside daydreaming about the way things
sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are
making me see stars
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with
lies
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes
Blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind blowing through the flowers on your tomb
Blowing through the curtains in your room
Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us
apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to
change my heart
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the
wheels have stopped
What's good is bad what's bad is good you'll find out when you
reach the top
You're on the bottom.I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt
ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed your
eyes don't look
into mine
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone faced
while the
building burned
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees
while the
springtime turned
Slowly into autumn.

Idiot wind blowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to Capitol
Idiot wind blowing every time you move you teeth
You're an idiot babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've
read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishing I was somebody
else instead
Down the highway down the tracks down the road to ecstasy
I followed you beneath the stars hounded by your memory
And all you raging glory.

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm
finally free
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which
separated you from me
You'll never know the hurt I suffered not the pain I raise above
And I'll never know the same about you your holiness or your
kind of love
And it makes me feel so sorry.

Neil Young - Don't Let It Bring You Down:

Quote:

Old man lying by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by,
Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping down the allay at dawn
And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Blind man running through the light of the night
With an answer in his hand,
Come on down to the river of sight
And you can really understand,
Red lights flashing through the window in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
White cane lying in a gutter in the lane,
If you're walking home alone.

And, OF COURSE, The Beatles:

Quote:

Why don’t we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us.
Why don’t we do it in the road?

listening to a lot of Co&Ca at the moment, its a shame that I can't comprehend the fictional story behind the lyrics yet becuase the music kicks ass

I really like Jack Johnson's lyrics though, "Cookie Jar":

Quote:

I would turn on the TV
But it's so embarassing
To see all the other people
I don't know what they mean
And it was magic at first
When they spoke without sound
And now this world is gonna hurt
You better turn that thing down
Turn it around

Well it wasn't me, says the boy with the gun
Sure, I pulled the trigger, but it needed to be done
Because life's been killing me ever since it begun
You can't blame me cause I'm too young

Well you can't blame me
Sure, the killer was my son
But I didn't teach him to pull the trigger of the gun
It's the killing on the TV screen
You can't blame me
It's those images he's seen

Well you can't blame me, says the media man
Well I wasn't the one who came up with the plan
And I just point my camera at what the people wanna see
Man, it's a two-way mirror
And you can't blame me

Well you can't blame me, says the singer of the song
Or the maker of the movie, which he based his life on
It's only entertainment and as anyone can see
It's smoke machines and makeup
Man, you can't fool me

It was you, it was me, it was every man
We've all got the blood on our hands
We only receive what we demand
And if we want hell, then hell's what we we'll have

I would turn on the TV
But it's so embarassing
To see all the other people
Don't even know what they mean
And it was magic at first
But let everyone down
And now the world is gonna hurt
You better turn it around
Turn it around
