The Head on the Door is The Cure at their most accessible pop (and in it's right a pop masterpiece), but IMHO Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is a stronger album as a whole, much more challenging, and thoroughly rewardable. To me it's the closest in style with Wish.

it's no secret around here that i lurve The Cure, congrats on discovering them! and with a vast catalogue like theirs, you'll discover many gems. have fun!

You're swaying me with that album description! I might just go with that one then ('Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me') and get another deep but rewarding experience. If my funds warrant it though I think I'd also grab "The Head On the Door' as a nice adjudant to all the dense, heavy Cure material i'd have to digest.

Thanks a lot for that recommendation! I'm very much recpetive to new artists and expanding my musical straospheres so I'll definately give them a whirl when I get a chance. I'll put them on my list

Singlehandedly saved the musical wasteland that was the 80's.
Join the Dots: B-Sides and Rarities Has become my favorite.

Thats where I'd eventually like to be lol! I think rarieties and b-sides will be the final segment of my journey with the Cure though, logic dictating, but who knows

. You looking forward to their new, upcoming album then?

As a side sub topic, I currently also own 'Pornography'. What do you guys make of this album?

the 80s was actually a magical time for music... Husker Du, Minutemen, Replacements, R.E.M., Mission of Burma, Pere Ubu, Tom Waits, Lounge Lizards, Fishbone, Nick Cave/Birthday Party, Dead Kennedys, Talking Heads, Black Flag, Spacemen 3, The Church, The Alarm, Bad Brains, Kraftwerk, Talk Talk...

need I go on?

Nice list you have going there. I've been listening to Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Lounge Lizards a lot. Saw Tom Waits in June and seeing Nick Cave September 16.

Glad you liked the 80's. I thought it sucked monkey nuts.
For every decent band I can name several complete garbage bands...

Whitesnake, anyone? (Or _________ insert Big Hair Band Name Here).
Madonna?
Wham! / George fkn Michael?
The abomination that Genesis became? - or Mike and the Mechanics?
Asia
Starship
Huey Lewis
Tears For Fears
Flock of Seaguls

I could go on and on.

But hey, that's just my opinion, no offense.
Grunge was a relief.

I'm a huge Cure fan. However, I came to appreciate The Cure rather late with the "Wish" album. "Disintegration" is their masterpiece hands down. A very close second would be "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me." I have listened to several cuts from their next album and it really does sound like it could be in that league...

Excellent Album. I would recommend Seventeen Seconds and Faith. Concert: The Cure Live is worth it for Charlotte Sometimes, but I can't stand the songs on it from the Top and Japanese Whispers.

IMHO, Cure has been making poor albums since the Wish era (Wish, Paris, and Show).

If you want to sample of all their stuff up til 'Head on the Door', pick up 'Staring at the Sea'. When it came out on cassette, the first side was everything that's on the CD and the second side was all 'B' sides. That cassette had 25 songs on it. When I got into the Cure, you couldn't even get their albums on CD. I think I'll have to pick up the rarities CD to hear those songs again.

I would say 'Head on the Door' is my favorite album followed by 'Faith'. There's something about the bass on that album that really pulls me in. I think it's their darkest album.

Interesting thoughts and opinions. However, I think I'll try 'Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me' next and maybe, if I can spare the cash, 'The Head On The Door'. And, of course, I'm bound to give 'Pornography' a listen at some point. I think that'll be plenty to sink my teeth into to for now.

P.s.// Out of interest, I understand the Cure did a trio of concerts/live shows, each show a whole album live ( I think the albums were 'Bloodflowers', 'Pornography' and 'Disintergration'?). I believe the designated albums were regarded as the Cure's most definitive by Smith. Love the concept! Were these released on DVD or anything?

Trinity is just a live performance DVD with emphasis on their darker side. Between albums, they like to release misc. concert CDs and DVDs. The others are Festival, Show, The Cure in Orange, Play Out, and Concert. They also have a couple of video compilations. I would just stick with the albums for now, and if you turn into a die hard fan, then go after the other stuff. Although when I saw them in concert in May, they played a lot of older, darker material that sounded much better live than on the album despite being a band member short. Shake Dog Shake, 100 Years, and A Strange Day pop out as standouts.

Rest assured, I was merely inquiring about that project out of curiosity. I wouldn't buy it yet until, at least, I've listened to and know the albums in question. As you say, its more of a hardcore fan item. Thanks for the info and clarity though. Much appreciated.

Out of curiosity again, the last track on 'Disintergration', 'Untitled', is this called 'Untitled' or is it simply not titled?
