I have a pair of DT990-Pro 250ohm headphones.  I love them but it feels like I'm running them right on the edge of their capabilities.  I often have to turn the volume down to avoid over-excursion of the headphone drivers.  I use a Yamaha C-80 Stereo Preamp from 1984 as a headphone amp and it has a VERY powerful headphone amplifier, such that all of my little-dot units were almost immediately retired when I got it.  Now my C-80 works these DT990's like a $5 whore.

The only headphone I ever had that had as much bass as I like is my Sony XB700's, but other than the bass, they sound like crap in the rest of the spectrum compared to the DT990's.

Any ideas?

Upgrade to the DT990 Premium 600-Ohm, bass is a little more controlled.

Maybe the Denon AH-D600 or the older Denon AH-D2000
But they are low impedance (25-Ohm) headphones, so I'm guessing your pre-amp might not match well and you would need to get a different headphone amplifier.

I think he wants more bass not more controlled bass.

If you can get your hands on an old Denon D2000 or D5000, those should satisfy you.  The D2000 was my direct replacement to the DT990 when I wanted more bass.

Ultrasone Pro 2900?
Like the DT 990, it's an open headphone, but is supposed to deliver more bass, with impressive impact and amazing control (might also have better mids and a wider soundstage?).
In fact, its the audiophile version of the Pro 900 bass beast, which says... a lot.
