I decided to purchase the Grado MS-1 after reading so much about it, I just had to try it out.

What I don't understand is, When people say "You don't need an amp to drive these". Well that is correct...You can plug them into anything and they WILL produce sound. But as everyone knows, To get the best out of cans/speakers you are going to need an amp for a cleaner sound and louder volumes at a...Cleaner sound. I just can't stand listening to music any more without an amp, It just doesn't seem right to me. After having some Morel speakers in my car amped...It changed my way of listening.

I'm looking for a sub $200 amp, I'd like it to be a tube amp.

I listen to mostly Metal and Trance music, I've read a lot of reviews on the Bravo Ocean amp, And on one review site it said "NOT GOOD FOR DANCE MUSIC". But why? He never really explained why. It could have been the stock tube as well.

These set of cans sound nice and clear on lower volumes, But when you turn it up it has a harsh shrill that my ears are sensitive too. It just starts to sound dirty too quickly, I know an amp will help this out a bit. I am not really looking for more volume I just want more warmth and accuracy.

Any suggestions?

Aune T1 with a 6N23p Should be a good choice under 200$, it's a combo Dac + tube amp !

In case you want an alternative, the Little dot+1 (a classic, and among the few budget amps i liked) pairs really well with Grado. Add a cheap dac, and you have a decent rig.

Another great suggestion!

I am hoping an amp will really tame the high's on these Grado's. |'ve read many reviews that the high's are tamed...But I think not.

The best solution i know to tame the high's on the Sr series from Grado is this http://www.ttvjaudio.com/TTVJ_Flat_Pads_p/aat0000100.htm.

The Aune T1 with the stock tube is great, but with a vintage 6n23p tube (70s or 60s) you 'll have no harshness in the highs.

That's quite expensive for some foam, I may think about getting them.

I like these Grado's MS-1's so much I may do a lot of mods on them. Changing the headband & cable too.

hmmmm you're ready for some "grado porn" :) enjoy : http://www.martincustomaudio.com/
Imho Martin is the best grado-modder : cups, headband, metal gimbals and blocks, cables, he can even build entires headphones from scratch!

That stuff looks great!

I actually just purchased this from a buddy of mine, He sold it to me for $20 as he doesn't use it. All I need to get is a 3.5mm cable. I don't think their are any reviews on the forums about this amp.

for 20$ it's really cheap, what kind of source will you use with this amp?

I only have two sources, And they are not that good.

First is an old CD Discman,  Sony D-465 1bit Dat.

The other is a USB soundcard for my laptop. The Asus Xonar...Which is actually pretty good for the price.

I will give a little review of that tube amp once I have time to listen to it.
