is this a good combination? i'm going to be getting a pair of 702 in the near future but want to make sure that they will sound good with my mkIII.

From what I heard, K70x is a low impedance headphone that requires more current rather than voltage. The LD MKIII is an OTL tube amp and they don't pair well with cans that are low impedance such as these.

any suggestions then?

I think the Matrix M-Stage is a fantastic pair for the K701/702s - tons of feedback on that on Head-fi regarding that pair and I love mine - HeadFiFanatic is right. The lower impedance of the K702 does not pair well with OTL tube amps. If you crave tubes - the LDI+ is a hybrid and can drive the AKGs pretty good. I'd still recommend the M-Stage.

i have no preference for tubes. i just own the mkIII for my 580s because i think they pair great together. i am just looking to get whatever is going to be best for the 702's
obviously i was hoping not to have to spend more money but if i have to then i have to.. :)

Understood - I owned the MKIII (sold it) and thought it was "ok only" with my K701s...the M-Stage took them to a much higher level and still is my reference setup. Ironically - I think I'm buying an MK IV (but for my Beyers).
