I just picked up a custom built amp on ebay based on the Headwize Single Ended OTL scheme (http://gilmore2.chem.northwestern.edu/projects/showfile.php?file=waarde1_prj.htm) and I was wondering if it would benefit me (subjective I suppose) to run my Little Dot MK2 as a preamp to it, or if it's even safe to do so.

The preamp specs on the Little Dot MK2 are as follows:
  1. Pre-Amplifier Output Impedance: 600 ohms
  2. Pre-Amplifier Gain: 3-10x (also controlled via gain switches)
  3. Pre-Amplifier Voltage: 10V RMS
  4. Pre-Amplification circuit includes both driver and power tubes

The voltage does seem rather high, and I'm not sure what sort of input voltage the Headwize design can tolerate.

Just try it - I have used several headphone amps as 'preamp' for a number of different integrated amps without a problem - obviously you aren't going to fire the combination up and walk away from it : just plug an old pair of headphones into the socket on your amp and you'll soon know if your 'preamp' is regulating the volume. I never have speaker connected when setting up an integrated amp - thats what Sennheiser made the HD201 for ....

Problem solved - next.
