My current setup is:

iPod Touch 3G > Fiio L3 > Shure In-Line Volume Control > 3.5 Male-Female adapter > Shure 535LE with Lune MkII

For some strange reason, I find that the cleanest and sweetest sound comes from listening to the line-out without any amping.

I actually own the iBasso D12, Digizoid ZO2 and Fiio E1, and have auditioned various iBasso, Headamp, RSA, Hippo amps from Stereo and Jaben.

All of them add a kind of harshness, shrillness, hiss/noise to the sound compared to the LOD.

I really want to do something to my setup to improve portability/aesthetics (looks a bit hacked together)/sound (if possible)

Anyone has any thoughts on why this is so? Any other gear to recommend?

well thats odd, because particularly with multidriver IEMs, using a constantly varying output impedance driven by a low current dac output is a terrible idea technically, perhaps you like the erroneous frequency response you are getting?
