Would be interesting to hear your take on the difference between the Auralic Aries and the microRendu too. Or is it also not "dramatic"?

It depends on how you're using the Aries.

The Aries via AES/EBU XLR sounds better than both the Aries' USB output and the microRendu (which is, of course, USB-only), if you're feeding an Yggdrasil.  The performance improvement is bigger between the AES and USB connections than it is between the Aries in USB mode and the microRendu.

In other words, if you're going to use a USB connection, you're probably better off just going with the microRendu.  But if you want the best overall performance, an Aries via AES/EBU XLR is discernibly better.

Still not, in anyway, "dramatic" though.

An interesting note with the microRendu ... if you have more than one of Sonore's products on your network (I have both a SonicOrbiter SE and the microRendu), then you have to turn all but one of them off if you want to configure/change settings on them (including for initial setup) or the web-based config tool loses it's mind.

Curious.as to what you are using as a PS for the mR?

I tried it with three different PSUs:

  • iFi iPower 9v
  • Teddy Pardo 7v/2A
  • One of my own design.

I didn't find any discernible difference between these with Yggdrasil (differences are present with some other DACs, but again, not the "huge" improvements I see mentioned frequently)

Aries, which is the "full" version with it's LPS, beat all of them using the AES/EBU XLR anyway.

I'd love to get Baldr's take on these different inputs.  I asked about Audiophilleo before but I don't think he addressed it.

I wonder, is Schiit considering a USB v4 in the future, or are they confident v3 is as good as it gets.  'cause I do think by audiophilleo with purepower via SPDIF sounds a bit better than native USB on Yggdrasil.  It'd be nice if it didn't.

IMO and I have two Yggy's , I would say AES in the best.

I would say go AOIP, it blows away anything USB can do, or should I say removes the things USB is not doing right. Night and day difference, and TBH doesn't cost more than a good USB chain (Rednet 3).

I don't fully understand.  I have a Mac server in my house.  Would this rednet thing act as a transport for my DAC, and how does one control it?

So I need something that will accept an AOIP stream from JRiver on my mac and provide my YGGY with SPDIF via AES/EBU....is this how it works?  What is the cheapest quality device that is available that achieves this?

Ok. I have a Mac Mini. I used to feed music to my DAC via USB - M2Tech SPDIF convertor - SPDIF - DAC

What I have found after 4 years of expensive USB fixer boxers and convertors, inbuilt boards and various USB cable filters is USB is not good for high end audio. The treble edge, haze and general digital coarseness to the sound was not my source or DAC, it was the way I was getting the data out to my DAC.

So, you use your Mac's 1000T Ethernet port - RedNet 3 - SPDIF out - DAC. result, musical nirvana.

PM me if you want more info.
