My sincere apologies if this has been asked before, first post here.

I have an iphone 6s Plus which I use with a Dragonfly Red as my music player. Since the DAC is used by default on the iphone, I use it for streaming movies, Tidal and many other streaming audio/video apps. Given this setup, do I have any advantage to getting a V30 ? It looks like the V30 onboard DAC is used right now only by Tidal and some offline music players? I don't have any hi-res audio files, so any other streaming service would not use the Hi-Fi DAC? (I have the V20, and did not notice any advantage to turning on the DAC when using streaming apps)

The ONLY way to utilize the V30 DAC is though wired headphones connected with the 3.5" jack--if you stream Tidal etc you'll notice the hi-fi icon is greyed out. If you use other listening methods other than direct connect any other phone will suffice. Even the supposedly great Bluetooth specs (AptX-HD) are not testing out as grandiose as first thought.

Yeah...but all told the unit will weigh 11 lbs (plus whatever you have in your suitcase). Hit the gym before taking it on the plane! Let me know if you (or anyonoe else) backs it.
Here's a nice review of the prototype...supposedly that suitcase extra makes a world of difference.

I don't think 11 lbs is a problem at all. I'd wonder how it would stand up to being thrown around by airport staff, but I guess as long as you never put it in checked baggage, you should be fine. It looks great!

Congrats on your first post (of many, I hope!). The DAC situation is a bit complicated. As long as you've enabled the HiFi DAC option, it will be used - even by your third party apps. However, your music may not be playing back at the sample rate you think. You can read more here:

The DFR is a good product. SQ was close, from my listening tests. The main advantage you'd get with the V30 is you'd avoid the need to also carry a DFR and a USB cable/camera connection kit.

Many thanks for replying. I do intend to use wired headphones. I'm trying to compare the audio quality between:

1) iPhone 6 Plus with Dragonfly Red connected through the camera connection kit. I'm plugging my headphones to the Dragonfly.

2) V30 with the onboard 3.5mm audio jack.

If the Dragonfly Red has superior sound quality to the V30 and the advantage of being used with any music service (not just PowerAmp for onboard music and Tidal for online) then I'll just stick to my old phone. If the V30 uses the DAC for all output sound and the quality is better than the Dragonfly, then certainly would be worth spending money on..

I have a V30 and still have an Iphone SE with Dragonfly Red.

Similar sound quality. V30 better as a single solution and battery life better (plus better phone IMO)

I stream Tidal in the Tidal App and UAPP app and Quad DAC is used no problem. Obviously its Technically better in UAPP as bit perfect.

You won't notice a big difference until you upgrade to hifi files and high quality headphones or iem. Garbage in garbage out.

Thank you for this, very helpful. Looks like I'll stick with my iphone for some more time then, no point spending almost 1k for the same sound..

Similar and will depend on your ear/headphones.

If you use Spotify, iPhone is only phone that will do offline bit-perfect to the DFR. V30 would upscale via internal DAC and via DFR.

Well on subject of super battery from earlier

Now at 27% with:

45hrs usage
Est. Time remaing 14hrs
Phone idle time 1 day 21hrs
Screen on time 5hrs 30min

Never had a modern smartphone last this long, and with no power saving option set.

I picked up a fostex t50rp mark 3 today so I can leave it at the office and not worry about my more expensive headphones. I read everywhere how hard these are to drive but the V30 does fine with these headphones it surprised me

yes the battery on the V30 is very good - much better then my S8+ I really want to switch my main sim into my V30 but like the s8 as well - I think the only way to force me to is to sell my s8
