LG V10 : New ESS Chipped Flagship Android Phone from LG
Jan 26, 2016 at 10:38 AM Post #1,923 of 3,525
I find the V10 better than my X1. Background is black, that's the biggest difference for me.

Been a while since I owned my ak100ii, but I do know I'm enjoying this more overall, but for me, it's due to V4A. I'd choose this over my AK240 when rooted. Without root, I'd choose the AK240. I'd probably say the ak100ii sounds better vs stock V10. That's going from memory though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Hey guys! I got my V10 already from the 19th on this month, immediatel installed and enabled DAC Fix and I enjoyed SOOO much the audio quality from it. And yes, you need a 50 Ohms + headphone pair to activate the amplifier, getting more DNR and a higher volume level (I tried it with a 60 Ohms pair of headhpones, wich besides his impedance was a REALLY good pair of headset, my bad I didn't asked the name to my friend). I also found that using a jack extender cable I'm able to bypass the audio device detection getting the same power for an High-Impedance headset with my In-ear C:

Anyway I feel a lot "limited" with these ones. I could ear the difference betwenn a In-ear and a full size headphone - so much more details in addition on the second, that would be great, for example, for home listening.

I would to ask you to suggest me a nice pair of High Impedance headset that would give the best brillance at the V10 audio rendering (max. budget: ~ 70€). Dunno if I have to post this question in another thread, but meantime I'll leave my question here.

For all the rest... Great phone! And thanks to all the users helped here the other people to fix their problem and giving information for who was still undecided if buy it or not.

Waiting for your suggests :)

Koss PortaPro. About 60 ohms and less than half cost of your budget. Amazing sound with the V10 and almost as portable as iems. Sometimes use my Portapro more than my other headphones that cost over 10x more.

Portapro used to get almost all my headtime with any amp or source until I became an IEM addict! Also used them over cans 15x their price...

Do you want on ears, iem, or don't care?

Don't wear iems and some on-ears too uncomfortable so guess I prefer over-ears.

But the Portapro is so light and very little pressure on my ears. Been using them a lot past few nights since, unlike most of my over-ears, they don't slide off my head when lying down.

Seems to be a lot of hype behind this phone, and even though I can understand why I didn't get blown away while testing this one. Sure its a really nice phone, one of the best but the battle of high-end phones is really more about nitpicking and personal preference than anything else these days. The overall quality of high-end phones have reach such high levels that you will have a really hard time telling them apart on performance alone. The speed of the SoC's (GPU+CPU) have reach such high levels that people can hardly tell the ones that rank number 1-3 apart from the ones that ranks 5-10. Same goes for other areas like camera quality, take DXOMark's list of the best cameras for instance. Things have come a long way this year and even the phones ranking as low as 10-12 on their list get some really great scores. It's all about nitpicking and personal preference at this point.

I for one never really consider anything other than Nexus devices, but that's purely because I hate the severe lack of software support all the various OEM's have on their Android phones. But that's my personal preference and even though LG is far from the worst when it comes to software support I do find the delay infurerating non the less. And I do hate that so few OEM's are respecting Google's Material Arts UX-design and incorporate something that is by far uglier in almost every possible way.

But then again, Nexus devices never feature top of the line camera modules, camera software or anything special in terms of DAC / amplifier.

To me the audio quality of the LG V10 isn't that impressive all things considered. Sure it's really good for a smartphone, especially a Android smartphone as all those phones who relay directly on Qualcomm isn't all that great. But this phone is not replacing my external-DAC and amplifier setup at home, not by a long shot. So then I have to ask, what is the point?
When using my Westone UM3X and Westone 4R which is what I use when I want great audio quality while "on-the-go" the LG V10 do not sound any better compared to phones like the Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge / S6 Edge+ or the iPhone 6 / 6S / 6  Plus / 6S Plus. And using my portable headphones (B&O BeoPlay H7) they sound exactly the same as the DAC and amplifier is ran within the headphones themselves.

I won't be logging my Sennheiser HD 650 and HD 700 around, and while being at home I would never use the LG V10 to drive them any way.

At least to me, this sounds like something some people would be bragging about but barley use in their ever day lives.

But that does not mean that the phone is overall great and surely is a tempting and very good phone for many users out there.

I am thinking of selling my G4 and getting V10, will the sound difference make the price worth it? So far I find the sound in G4 extremely bad and I really loved my Fiio X1 for example.

I prefer to keep my music organized in folder set up, so does the LG music player support folder view? If not does the DAC fix really work on all apps?

EDIT: I listen music through my phone about 10 hours day during work, so this is important for me.

Sounds like you never got the V10 into high (or aux) power mode.

The UM3X is over 50 ohms but if your cable has an in-line mic/remote then you're still getting normal power from the internal amp instead of high. That makes ALL the difference as I suspect the ESS 9602 amp chip only operates in high (for legal reasons which I explained some time ago); very similar to how another smartphone with decent quality output would sound with an external amp.

Most newer phones with a Snapdragon (which has it's own built-in dac/amp) can play up to hi-res audio. But that amp has low power so, even with the V10's DAC turned on, the improvements will be subtle because the same amp is being used.

Fact is, before the V10, I (and many others here) have NEVER heard this kind of sound coming from a phone WITHOUT using an external amp.

Another head-fier found a way to trick the V10's amp into high power mode:

He posted in the V10 review thread so I copied the post link and quoted from there.
I have found that if i Call my voicemail/or call in general and plug in my Phonak Audeo PFE IEM's, it will kick into high gain mode.  Normally when I plug them in it doesn't happen.  Might be worth checking out for some.

Wow! I just tried this and it worked. Called my voicemail and, while it was going, plugged in my Denon D1001s (32 ohms) and the dac went to high impedance.

We've been waiting for a way to trick the amp into high. Guess the last step in maximizing the V10 was only a phone call away.

Not sure why this works but perhaps the V10 doesn't want to risk having the volume too low if a wired headset? is plugged in during a call. Either way, this is another good discovery for the V10.

Hi guys. So ive been reading this thread lately and become very intrigued about the capabilities of the v10.

My question is,
1)How can we root the lg v10? Is there a step by step tutorial for this?

2) how can we call our voicemail to triger the aux mode?

Many thanks.

I've posted numerous times how to root in this thread, I'll try and dig up one of my posts. Which carrier are you on? Some, if you purchased the phone from that carrier, don't have root yet.

Are you a member of xda? Lots of great info there regarding root.

I'm not rooted but, for now, I believe the model number and carrier determine whether the phone can be rooted.

Any headphone adapter or extension cable can trigger AUX mode. You'll need a 50+ ohm headphone, high impedance adapter, or phone call to get high power.

No go with me...tried with Sony MDR-XB90EX IEMs.
Still triggers as "Normal" on Hi-Fi DAC when calling my Voicemail.

Once connection is made on voicemail, I plug in the headphones to the V10...DAC is triggered, but not in High Impedance mode.
I guess I'll have to stay with the adapter trick to achieve AUX mode instead.

Did you try it more than once? Sometimes the V10 doesn't go to high as it should. Happened a couple nights ago directly plugging my Portapros in. Got normal on first try. Had to remove and reinsert to get high.

Also, do your iems have an in-line mic and controls?
