Out of curiosity, does anyone have any experience with this player?

I also found this app to increase volume steps, but doesn't seem to work right for me:

I'm perhaps one of the few that prefers Neutron music player over Poweramp alpha build SQ wise.

Neutron is very tricky to get the right tuning you're looking for, Poweramp is much more user friendly and sounds good without toggling any setting. I also found the soundstage to be narrower on Neutron, but that's just through my ears

Alright, just rooted my device. Couldn't resist, heh.

Currently looking at AlsaMixer, and scratching my head about what any of that stuff means. Is there any decent guide that explains how this thing work? Any good settings you'd recommend?

Entering a 0 value gives high gain, just press enter with no number.
Entering 30 and below is mid gain.
And you can find the sweet spot for your IEM's. 25 is perfect for mine.

Does anyone know how to increase the volume steps without rooting? For some of my IEMs, I can't find just the right volume setting.

Poweramp 3 alpha has the setting to increase number of volume steps up to 100. Unfortunatelly for some reason it changes audio quality little bit (towards worse)...

I haven't noticed that, do you have DVC enabled?

Yes i have. It's very weired though but I'm sure there is a difference, I compared a lot..

Interesting. I haven't noticed that, and I just tried it out a few times. I did notice that with DVC off, there's a slight volume drop when I increase the steps, but I don't notice a loss in quality. With DVC on I don't hear any difference

I'm curious about the variant of this dac as ESS 9018 Hifi is an 8 channels dac and the portable version is only 2 channels.

The reason why ESS created a portable dac is to optimize battery usage on small and non dedicated dap devices such as smartphones. I'm not too optimistic about this new quad hifi dac, knowing that the V10 has a very poor battery life in hifi mode

With a proposed 4000ma battery in the v20 (I pray it's a removable battery), the power won't be an issue, especially with the ability to switch to a single DAC.
Even if it only gives 8hrs of music, with 24hrs standby time, this will be fine for me.
