Ok, am I the only one thus far completely unimpressed with the new Faceless. Someone posted the whole album. I got through the first three songs and was like .... meh .... maybe it was mood.

Yes, I am loving it.

For past few months, I am totally loving everything proggy. And this is definitely proggier

Something a reviewer pointed out was how derivative some of the sounds were... carnival music, babies crying, and some obnoxious keyboard leads unnecessarily taint the death metal music a bit much and only serve to distract the listener. I do agree, but I think I enjoy the proggy death metal (Faceless with longer song lengths!) enough for it to be enjoyable. That being said, Planetary Duality is the more straightforward and solid death metal release, and is still their flagship IMO.

Has anyone else heard the new Les Discrets? I liked it quite a bit better than their debut album.

I have to say, the new faceless album is much better from my point of view than any of their other releases. might be something to do with liking prog, and not liking deathmetal...
Why would straightforward be better than a more thought out, crafted work in a genre so full of regression and genericism?
I don't understand that kind of thinking...

Those two things are not mutually exclusive to each other. Planetary Duality is straightforward as well as thought out and well-crafted (IMO).

Some of the gems within the ODSM revival are taking a dead genre and reinvigorating it to great effect. Insomnium and Anaal Nathrakh (eh, arguable) are two bands that have essentially stuck to the same formula and are both awesome.

The proggy elements and bells and whistles could serve to distract or deteriorate and not be thought of as thought out/well-crafted, like having a clown pop up on-screen during a porno, though as I said I do not mind some of it. All comes down to your taste, after all. Since you do like prog more than death metal, it makes sense that you should like this release more than others as well as your affinity for "forward-thinking-ness"

My boyfriend, a massive Faceless fan and straightforward brutal-tech-death fan in general, couldn't stand 3 minutes of the second song, LOL!

The new Faceless is ok, but those "clean" clean vocals ruin it. Artificially enhanced vocals suck in general. I agree with the above that Planetary Duality is the better album, since it has the least amount of deathcore elements, from my perspective.

The clean vocals are awful. You guys want progressive technical death metal, see Gorod's latest. Probably the best tech death metal album this year.

Speaking of off-the-wall black metal, anyone into black metal with noise? I hardly foray into this realm as I need to be in the right mood, but this band seems to have something going on (helps they're slightly more "accessible" than other noise bands). Nightmarish. Ambience/build up until 4:00, then the black metal blasts in.

They're insane, scary to listen to at night. They remind me a lot of Darkspace and Wheels within Wheels latest split with Merkaba
