i also listen to some power metal and progressive: kamelot, evergrey, angra, therion, pagan's mind, and ofcourse....symphony-x!,the best in the progressive scene ,from what i heard so far.
my rule in metal is: as long as the music is melodic..take it as hard as you like!

i dont listen to a lot of death metal(yet..) but moonspell is the closest to that kind i listen to. (although their album-"irreligious" is kind a gothic).

I like Extreme goth metal, but Im VERY picky about it. Older Tristania is fantastic stuff, (World Of Glass album and albums after that suck) and so is Trail Of Tears. Also, older Graveworm is one of my fav bands. Its closer to symphonic blackmetal metal than just goth metal, but it still belongs to same genre as bands mentioned above. No female singer though, just gothic atmosphere, keyboards and bagpipes
If you havent heard Graveworm, you should check out As the Angels Reach the Beauty album, especially songs A Dreaming Beauty, Nocturnal Hymns and Behind The Curtain of Darkness.

I am listening to The Ocean -Precambrian (Proterozoic)- CD and it just kicks ass!

The Ocean

I recommend you listen to it, this song too Eoarchaean/The Great Void

Damn difficult names

I second the Ocean recommendation. Amazing progressive metal CD - especially the second disc. The piano and strings mixed in with the heavier parts just blows me away.

It had bloody well better be! Because if not, the repercussions will be great...

just got 2 cds of "swallow the sun" and they awsome!
"ghosts of loss" and "plague of butterflies "(the new ep),and also a "draconian"album called "arcane rain fell". i am kinda new to metal, ana this is what i have been looking for for some time, very melodic and slow metal music. if somebody would have told me that its calld "doom metal" i would start listening to it staraight away, but i love all the genres i listened so far.

Cor Scorpii-Monument

and

Blood Stained Dusk-Black Faith Inquisition are the best Black Metal albums of 2008, by far for me.

Cor Scorpii is the continuation of Windir (with Classical influences instead of Folk)

Blood Stained Dusk is an absolutely amazing USBM band with Pest (Ex-Gorgoroth) on Vocals.

Listening to Blood Stained Dusk-Coven Of The Dying Sun with my Alessandros is... magical. Honestly, i don't see a finer BM band right now.

Yesterday i did a digital rip of my vinyl copy of Symbolic, and listened to it in so doing...it's really an awesome album, intricate riffs and drum patterns, thought-provoking lyrics...the more i listen to Death, the more i lean towards the idea they hadn't recorded a single weak album...besides Chuck's songwriting and soloing skills, the band has always had awesome drummers, from Reinert to Hoglan to Christy, the last being the one i like most...

Both the vinyl and the 24/96 rip sound perfect, it's stunning how such an old and apparently inaccurate playback system manages to perfectly reproduce even the fastest music full of double bass runs, even Annihilation of the Wicked sounds awesome...i wonder how a moving piece of metal can have almost the same transient response as a digital recording...

@ meliboeus, any way you can share with some of us (like me?) your ripped album?

It seems like most of you guys are into melodic death metal, but is anyone else going to this sludgefest? Most of my favorite metal bands will be there (Boris, Neurosis, Converge, Mastodon, Harvey Milk, High On Fire).
