Ahh, you reminded me of a few I forgot. The new Katatonia is excellent. Why they aren't more popular is beyond me. And when I first read Illnath, I thought it was Ishahn. His new album is excellent. I've enjoyed all of his solo albums, but this one is the best IMO. Wasn't blown away by the new Amon Amarth, but it was good. And Dillinger's first album was brilliant, but since then, I can't seem to get into them. The new one really left me flat.
I thought Katatonia was somewhat disappointing. I liked hearing the different side of DEK and it sounded great, but it was a really lazy redo considering they used the same vocal tracks and basically just swapped out some of the instruments with acoustic versions. I would have liked to have seen some more creativity.
It has a nostalgic vibe for me as well, that takes me back to my youth in the early nineties. I actually really like these kind of vocals. I prefer high pitched and intense to deep and gruff.
When I can put on The Three-Faced Pilgrim it has the uncanny ability to make me feel like I'm back in time. It still sounds fresh where some bands almost sound like they are rehashing old ideas but do not sound exciting like Alghazanth.
One of the tricks they use is the instrumentation is always slightly changing. You can tell they really know how to get amazing little sound effects in the right places. They also somehow change tempo at times in the song. Now it makes me want to go back to old Dimmu Borgir and look for tempo changes that were unnoticed.
I have been playing this album for three days straight.

Riitiir is amazing. My wife even likes it! Some people criticized it because it's not trve or whatever, but the way I see it, it's just plain great music! Enjoy.
Did any of you get the free Blood Eagle EP "Kill Your Tyrants"? Its pretty solid and it's free! and its not super dynamic, but its better than alot

I still have all three compilations in my cd closet. I bought a lot of compilations in the nineties. I'll dig up some more gems. There were a lot of great compilations back then. "Death... is only the beginning." was another good series and don't forget the infamous "Nordic Metal, a tribute to Euronymous". I have that one too.
Extra credits for anyone that recognizes and still owns an original copy of this classic compilation. This was a major influence on me as a teenager:

Yep, I own it. It is an experimental synth-ambient CD that came out. I purchased it at a used CD store about ten years ago. When I find it I'll post a snap-shot of it to prove it.lol
"Death... is only the beginning." are great. You were able too see a ton of weird videos in the video series.
I never purchased Blackend 4 either. Just didn't look good. Plus as imports in the states those comps were expensive back in the day. Same as you I only have one,two and three.
