Legendary PCDPs

Duncan,
I begin to like my D-E900(E905) even more these days. I love the air, the treble, and the big soundstage. I still wish...that the bass can be a bit better.
I accept that the D-777 doesn't perform well with the bigger phone; however, with my MDR-E484, and E-888..they are very hard to beat. On the other hand, the D-E900 with the V6 is an excellent combo. I am getting my Senn HD-580 very soon...and I am wondering...which one of my portable will sound the best with the Senn + Creek OBh-11. As for now, my Sony D-303 (with a gold plated lineout) has the best lineout out of all my portable. I didn't get to test my D-555 just yet. I will let you guys know.

I would say almost without doubt that the E905 will sound the best... I think the 555 and 777 share very similar (older style) DACs (but, with your insight into the 555 it sounds like that has a better headphone out than the 777?!)... I'm not sure about the 303 myself ~ It could have a higher end DAC than the D777, or maybe when you hook up good components (as you propose to do) the D303 will let itself down, sounding grainy and harsh... compared to the smooth E905.

It would be kind of you if you could let us know

Duncan,
Honestly speaking, Sony D-555 and D-777 has **totally different*** sound characteristics. I can assure this right now that Sony D-555 is more superior than the D-E900. D-E900 share similar sound characteristics to the D-555. However, whatever the D-E900/5 try to achieve...the D-555 can do it better.
Sony D-555 features: 6 band adjustable EQs, Digital Bassboost, Surround mode, and DSS. Anyway, D-555 has the sense of air, very very good clarity...and super wide soundstaging. I did A-B comparison b/w the D-E900 and the D-555..and...the D-E900 is only 80% of whatever the D555 has to offer. This is true, Duncan...however, this is my opinion.

On the other hand, D-777 share similarity to the D-303. Both of player delivers...very warm sounding. However, the D-303 seems to do everything much better than the D-777. The megabass is punchy..unlike those of the D777, which can be somewhat muddy and overpowering. The midrange is also better than the D-777. Soundstage is a little wider as well.

As for lineout, D-E900 has a better lineout than those of the D-777's. However, again!, to my ears...the D-303 provides a smoother sound, and bit better clarity than those of the D-E900's.

Let me know what do you think...but remember, D-777 and D-E-900 are truely **portable***!!! So the king of a real portable discman is the same, Sony D-E905 and D-777.

Since we're on this topic...

I've got a Sony D-66 that I bought some time around 1990. It claims to have "8 Times Oversampling and Dual D/A Converter System".

Anyone have opinions or info on this unit? It still sounds good to me, but I don't know much about PCDPs from that era.

Thanks,

greg.

Sorry Zend, the D66 isn't a player that I myself have heard of

Purk...

I'm interested... the D555, how powerful is the headphone amp in terms of milliwatts per channel? this is quite interesting, because the picture you paint is that the D555 headphone out is like using my E905 with my JMT from its line out!!

I do know that the E905 is lacking, not in terms of being a portable CD player... as you say it more than likely is one of the true kings in that field, but ~ in terms of sound... it is NOT a match for my full size setup (but then again, look at the equipment I have!!)... If the D555 were able to bridge that gap between portable and full-sized sound, then I would be very interested in picking one up...

Thanks

Duncan,
Sony D-555 was manufactured in 1990. It is powered by rechargeable lead acid battery (Part no. BP-2EX). If I remember it correctly, it has 9mw/chanel. Every input/output is gold plated. It has a very clean and powerful lineout and "toslink" optical output. To me, it's the closest thing to an audiophile CD...I've ever experienced. According to a friend from Headwize, "neo", the listed price was almost twice as those of the D-777's. I am guessing b/w 350-450 dollars.
It features digital volume, digital DSPs, and...man it's heavy. Oh...it has 2 backlit LCD screen, one for track info, and another LCD devotes entirely to graphic equalizer display.
I would have to say, "yes", that the D555 headphone out is like using my E905 with my creek obh-11. It's that good. That's why, I am not so impress with the Creek amp that much. Oh my listening session was done with Sony mdr-E484, v6, or Grado Sr-80. That's the best I have for now.
Duncan, I can't say that the D-555 will bridge the gap b/w your D-E905 to your main righ. But, I can assure that...after a listening session with the D-555....you will see..what you have been missing from your D-E905.

The D777 list price in the UK in August 1995 was £330 (equivilant to $450) so... if what you say IS the case, and the D555 was worth twice as much as the D777, then you're looking at a $900 PCDP... Holy Cow!!!!

Duncan,
I remember the price only in Japanese yen. D-777 was 40,000 yen(about the same as the top of the line MD recorder), while the the D-555 was 65,000 yen.

I bought it used...so I didn't know the actual price.

Has onyone heard of the Sony D-E301? It's an old Sony pcdp that I use, but know nothing about. It's a Discman 10 sec. ESP with electronic shock protection, Digital Mega Bass, AVLS? and 1 bit DAC. It has a line out.

How does this player compare to the players listed above?

whoa whoa whoa...
I guess people are rating D-555 king.
BTW, is D-Z555 the same as the D-555 or anything like the D-555?
(I am getting it if it is so)

Aniwaz... does anyone have pics of D-555 for us to *prey* to?

I think for the Asian market ---> Sony Z-555. International market --> Sony D-555. Same model. Look just as good and very nice sounding too!!! Oh...both LCD has an amble color backlit.
