Leak!!! Sony's New Portable Linear PCM Recorder PCM-D100 (upgrade of the famous D50s)

Sep 17, 2013 at 1:48 PM Post #16 of 126
The D-100 specs say it offers a "maximum recording time" of 25 hours on four AA batteries, when recording in the MP3 mode, etc. etc. without monitoring - meaning, without using headphones to monitor as you record.

So, as a player, if you're using its very weak (25mW per channel) headphone amplifier, you will get something less than 25 hours of play time on four AA batteries.

Using the Line Out, I would think you might get something around 25 hours of play time - same as when recording but not monitoring with headphones - but I'm just guessing.

------

I know from prior correspondence with Sony support, that the PCM-M10 has s proprietary sigma-delta DAC of their own design, integrated into the recorder's motherboard - it's not a standalone chip made by someone else.  I suspect this is true for their more expensive recorders, as well, including the D-100, but I don't really know.

One thing's for sure - they go out of their way to deliver a very flat, neutral, analog signal to the Line Out of their field recorders, so you can count on it being neither warm nor cold.  It will probably just be more transparent than the DAC in the PCM-M10, with even a lower noise floor. Again, just guessing.

I just now called Sony's U.S. sales headquarters at the number shown below and asked, "Do you know when Sony will be releasing the new PCM-D100 recorder here in the United States?"

Answer:  "No, I don't know."

From the Sony's offcial  announcement page: (In Japanese; Google Translate may helps you :))

http://www.sony.jp/CorporateCruise/Press/201309/13-0917/

The MOST IMPORTANT feature which I love is....

OPTICAL OUTPUT!

and it also has OPTICAL INPUT too.

So, I don't care much about the built-in DAC, because we can use our own beloved 'DAC', in my case iBasso D10.

Cheers.

Thank you.

The D50 had that stuff, too.

The problem if you want to use a D100 (or D50 or D1) is that they are not DAP/PMP sized. They're recorders and a bit big and bulky. I love my D50, will probably upgrade to the D100, but I'd never use my D50 where I use my F807.

Did you really expect some random person at Sony to know? Seriously? They've got so many products.

If it is going to be sold here (and I believe it will), you'll find it listed here: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-proaudiosite/cat-audio/?refine=4294967294&navId=4294963653+4294967268+4294966602

Yes, you are right. D100 is bulky. :)  Yes, I forgot the PCM Dxxs are Professional Audio Recorder. when I posted previously.

If I want digital out, I can use Android smartphone/tablet + OTG + app which able to stream out digital audio stream vis USB Audio infrastructure to USB DAC :)

For a smaller recorder.  I wish the next version/model of  PCM M10, includes the digital out feature.

Thank you.

The main sales number for Sony's U.S. corporate Sales office is hardly "some random person at Sony". Did your mommy forget to boost your self esteem today?

Unless you're talking to the Pro Audio folks, it's like giving a dart to a blind man. Sony has yet to announce a recorder  that didn't come out here. Since it's months away from coming out in Japan even, not worth worrying about. It'll show up on that site when/if it's announced. I would bet it will be $999.99ish since that's basically the Japanese price.

I actually tried this in Jaben shanghai and it sounded seriously good to my ears although I don't have anything to compare. I went to try out the dx50, but the dx50 just sounded bad after listening to d100.....(well there is a triple price difference).....

There's some interesting information on the new D100 available at this site (using Google Translate, if necessary):

Pictures were very very slow to load from that server, so here they are, but do read the text at that site - it loads well ahead of the pictures...

I will take this over AK120. What is battery life and what DAC uses?

Wait, are you serious?

I'm interested in the PCM-D100 only because I have a pair of inexpensive binaural microphones and I think this would be a complimentary device to use over my noisy computer USB dongle to record audio.

I wouldn't buy this solely to use as a PMP...
