VE offers an ambience system on their customs, I wonder if that would help. I’m sure it’ll change the bass though.

Had VE8 with ambience and decided to close it. Unfortunately it leaks a lot of subbass, leaving the mid and upper bass as it was, so it sounds a bit strange and loses some coherency because of that. Then when you use the fully-closed vent, it creates a pipe that cancels about 3 kHz - very important region - and again you lose some coherency. You probably wouldn't hear it, it's a -5 dB but quite narrow reverse spike, but still... I would recommend getting a closed VE8 after all to get maximum out of your VE8 which was clearly designed to be fully closed and sounds best like that.

I found the Ely to be thinner on the midrange compared to the VE8. But others that have the customs say it’s the other way around.
Ely is more aggressive than VE8, which is warm neutral, or even the apotheosis of warm neutral tuning, the very definition of, or you could say - a kind of perfection.
Ely is somewhat more v-shaped, has even more bass, has also much more upper treble with an unusual and original upper mids highlight at 4-5 kHz.
Or looking the other way around - it is somewhat recessed at around 1 kHz region (middle mids) compared to lows and upper mids.
All of this results in bright vocals (they are clearly highlighted and that's what people probably find fascinating about them saying that they have beautiful mids) and still they get additional warmth (on maybe especially male vocals?) from the added bass.
But the colorisation is very specific - not often found in other models - having thinner midrange not because of flat lower midrange but recessed middle midrange.
If someone "knows midrange" (knows how midrange sounds when neutral), it's a bit strange sounding, with sucked out middle mids, but unique. A fun tuning, that sounds reference, but is not, and is very original and refined. It's very addictive, yet I would start with VE8 first, if I were to recommend a main model or even having only one model in a collection.

This is coming from a comparison of both custom versions of each right?

Yeah, I might really have to try the Ely in CIEM form.

From my review comparison notes with the VE8, I detailed that while the mids are filled with clarity, they were quite thin. Not bright but thin. For female vocals for example I found the VE8 to be closer to what my preferred female vocal voicing in an IEM.

VE8 and Ely CIEM are for sure gonna be on my wishlist lol

Thanks for your impressions buddy!

Does anyone know whether the VE8 universal cable uses memory wire for the ear loops, or is it just shrink?

I received my VE 8 8th Anniversary today. Actually, it’s a replacement for the first one shipped to me earlier this month, but that one had a broken nozzle.

I have nothing in my current collection that sounds like the VE 8, a full bodied sound with a smooth/warm tonal character and extended upper trebles. I love it! 😍
