Laughs from a latent Head-Fi'er (Scrypt)

Sep 4, 2009 at 5:11 AM Thread Starter Post #1 of 49
Over the years here, I befriended (online, via the forum, private messages, and e-mail, and maybe once or twice on the telephone) a Head-Fi'er who goes by the username "Scrypt." Veteran Head-Fi'ers probably remember him well. (Don't worry, I'm not memorializing him, as he's very much alive.) Some found him pretentious, every fourth word he typed being one to look up. But then you talk to him on the phone, and realize he expresses verbally as he does textually, and, in my opinion, he isn't the least bit pretentious--he's just him, and I'm glad he is.

Every once in a while--and, as if on cue, often when I need a smile the most--he'll drop me an e-mail, always very Scrypt in nature. Some are things he wrote, some are anecdotes from his daily life, some are just jokes, some are long, some are one or two lines, maybe one or two were more serious--maybe.

Not too long ago, on a day I remember needing a laugh, an e-mail titled "Unusually Pedestrian Limericks" arrived from good ol' Scrypt. And inside it were these (written by him):

I laughed my ass off when I first read those, and have every time since, too. Yeah, maybe some of you grumpy types won't appreciate 'em, but I figured many of the members would.

Thanks for them, Rob.

Love them! I'm going to forward those to several friends and coworkers who will appreciate them.

Any chance you could persuade Scrypt to start posting again?

Ah, old Scrypt. He was a genius and a madman. I alternately loved and was terrified of him. Far too erudite for most of us. Very deep into this stygian outlook on life. I think his friends finally convinced him he was wasting his mind/talents as a poster on a Web forum. They were possibly right, but it was also the perfect place for him. I particularly liked it when he used to rip into people. His way with words was deadly funny then. Would I want him to post again? Of course!

Seeing some of his posts throughout my time here on this site, as well as now with that email, I am all the more convinced that he has to be somehow related to Bob Dylan, at the very least.

Thank you Scrypt, for astounding and confusing me once again!

I wish more people with erudite qualities would post on the forums I frequent, but I'm not at all surprised they come off the wrong way. I guess we just have to wait a few more years for Duggeh to mature and see what comes of him.

It's even better. He's kin to John Wesley Hardin. Bang Bang.

Certainly wish he'd post again.

Scrypt's patent hyper eruditions posted here on Head-Fi, (too few and too far between, IME&O) were always a joy to read, (WordWeb at the ready)

Good times ~

I too miss Scrypt's unique talent. We were very fortunate to be exposed to his eclectic writing style. Unfortunately, he started taking heat from a small group of members who simply didn't "get him", and understandably he took offense and stopped gracing us with his presence. It would be nice to hear from him again.

He was a mysterious character who many wondered about, but most members never realized that he was caught on film during our first National Meet in New York a few years ago.

Really, do you have a link to that pic? I'd be interested to see him. He was mysterious. There were even intimations of being raised by a very strict father who took pleasure in scaring him ala the British film "Peeping Tom." It was ALL very mysterious.

I'll never forget meeting him incognito at that meet, throwing around a knish joke.
Rob, come back, my dictionary, thesaurus, and google search engine are getting lonely!

I unfortunately never saw Scrypt here on the forum since I haven't been an avid poster for so so long. But that little group of limericks was pretty amazing I am still chuckling. I love people who don't fit the mold! Go Scrypt! (even though I don't know you)

Ah Scrypt! He was the one poster whose musings I read every time I came across them...even if I cared little for the subject matter. Hopefully he'll read this thread and start posting again...

Scrypt was chastised by some of his peers so he stopped posting.

It is truly lonely and misunderstood at the top.
What I don't think that he understood was that many (although, a chosen few), enjoyed his ramblings, and the rest of the world really didn't count in a world encompassed my mediocrity and sheep followers.

Come back. Even Elizabeth Barrette Browning was misunderstood utnil she was dead, and then it was too late.

Shine on, you crazy diamond.
