I am looking for a pair of headphones under $200 and I found the Klipsch Mode M40 for $180. My question is: are they going to be the best in this price range or should I look for something else? It needs to be closed or at least mostly closed. I know lots of people recommend the DT770 or the Custom One's. Any thoughts on this?

I live in Canada where everything that makes life more enjoyable is twice the price. They retail for $400 here. Even to get them across the border from the States would cost me probably $60 or so...

+1 at look elsewhere.

for other closed options sub$200:
1.) the akg k545 is $200 on razerdogaudio (and they can outcompete w/ the $350 momentums & $300 Visio HP50 according to reviewers on the k545 thread).
2.) sony mdr-1r has been out for a while and they are going for sub-$200.
3.) if you want noise-cancelling like the m40, the logitech ue6000 is $100 or less now. note noise-cancelling can degrade the sound quality, so I personally think closed noise-isolation is better.

That being said, I do need to keep them under $200. I realize headphones will be much better if I spend the money, but if I don't put a limit on it, there is always another price range not that far off that I could get into. Including shipping I need it to be under $200. I appreciate your input though. Something for me to think about!

Out of curiosity, how do the Sony and the AKG compare to the V-moda M-100?

lol the M100 is $300. and imo you need to get the $20 XL memory pads if you want to wear em for more than 30min.

the M100 are great, but the sound signature is v-shaped and it's really more bassy than a lot of alternatives $200-300 mid-fi alternatives. depends what kind of sound sig you're looking for.

you can jump down to the $100 ue6000 (retailed at $200). you can find em pretty discounted nowadays.

I am just trying to compare sound. I have heard the M-100 and am just trying to compare something to what I know. I don't know headphones at all. You would recommend the ue6000 over the M40?

mmm... lol. i haven't heard the m40 so i can't really say. sorry. if i was making the purchase, i would get the ue6000, but i'm biased lol.

haha that's fine. I am biased too. What about the ue6000 makes you so eager to jump on them?

hahaha i'm not that eager to jump on em, but if i only had $100 to spend, that's probably what i'd get. i've heard em before & they are solid. the white is pretty sexy as well hahah. it's definitely a good value as they were being compared against $300 headphones at release.

there are quite a few great options at the sub-$200 price range. if my budget went to sub-$200, my pick would be the MDR-1R as when I purchased em I got em for like $180. amazingly comfortable to wear. I haven't tried the akg k545, but those are the headphones I am most interested in for $200 and I would try to stretch my budget out for em hahah.

all personal opinions tho :)

edit: i haven't tried your pick of the m40 or the DT770 or the Custom One's tho just fyi
