Could someone show me how to take off the K701 earcup in order to disengage the bungee cords tensioning the headband. I've already tried it using the 'two mechanical pencils & turn anticlockwise' method and all I've managed to do is to tear up the silver mesh.

Counter clockwise to remove the grill. It does come off. It requires a good amount of force, just slow and steady. Don't try to crack it open. I had some fine long needle nose pliers that I filed down the tips and got a wide enough grip on the grill (by inserting both tips) to turn it without putting excessive force on the little holes and breaking them. Then there's 2 little screws to take off. You've probably seen them through the grill. Good luck.

If you don't have to take off the white housing I suggest you don't. It's a real...yeah..to take off.

I've just mangled a relatively huge portion of the the silver cover. I decided to stop before I crush something (if I haven't done so already). I've just lost my patience and snipped the bungee cords.

Evil way of the world, its always so much easier to take something apart than put it back together.

If I could have got the damned silver mesh off, I'd agree with you

And now the bad news. I think it might still be too small. Although it's probably not going to be as bad as the HE90. As I asked before, any idea on how to move the headband stops? Or after the knife, is it time for the chisel and hammer?

Man you've got courage. I'd never dare to do such a thing. Though, I do have the curiosity to look "under the hood" so t'speak.

I like the K701 so it's a keeper as a home-use dynamic. And it looks (unlike the R10 for example) possible to fit it exactly for my head. And it's cheap. As such I can always buy another one if I screw things up. However I would like to find a non-destructive way to move the stops.

#@&$! #@&$! #@&$! #@&$! #@&$!
The bungee cords have fallen inside the phones and are rattling around.

I knew this would go badly. I'll have to figure out a way to get the mesh off now or just resign myself to the fact that my head only gets on well with the Omega II / Qualia 010.

Is it too much to ask to be able to have a properly fitting pair of phones for casual use? I guess I must be that much of a mutant...

First off. Your avatar scares the hell out of me.

Second you could try to get some heavy duty paper clips, bend the end to make a small little hook. Make 2 like this and put them on oppisite sides and pull so you're turning the grill counter clockwise. I'd try this but I dont think I have any paper clips here. I'd hold the headphones between my knees and if you can't get a grip on those paperclips to rotate the grill get some pliers on them.

Good luck. You can do it!

Edit. The solder joints weren't all that great. The plastic pieces that hold the driver in the housing are pretty neat tho. If you don't remember how they went you might spend a little time figuring it out. Trust me.

Yeah... the mesh is actually looking pretty torn up so I've started to lose interest in this phone. I think I'll buy another one and start again with proper tools.
