In your previous post you said

and I was curious when you'd pick the 240M over the Sextett. I'll admit that they sound similar, as does the K260 that I own, but I prefer the Sextett. The main difference between the Sextett and the K240M is the passive radiators in the Sextett.

Ah, I see why you ask. Well, I don't prefer one or the other automatically. I simply grab whichever is closest for any recording for which the k501's seem either too lean or harsh. I suppose I could do a comparison between the 240m and Sextett, but, as I said, I have not.

Again, I'm sorry I gave you the impression I prefer one or the other, but I don't, at least not yet.

Imo the best current production AKG is the K601.

It's the only current production I've heard and I do like it.

Good point, I forgot about that. I didn't like the extra bass for the K501 with K701 pads though. It sounded muddy to me.

Then use K500 pads (much better than the K501 pads) and an amp which emphasizes the lower end like the Little Dot I+ (hybrid amp). That's the combo I use at the office and I love it. Would even be better with a K500, though. I also have a pair of K401s at the office and in combination with the tubes the soundstage is just HUGE! Too big at times. If you like bass and forward presentation the K401 is the one to go with. It's got very good bass and very much for an open AKG model. You don't have to change the pads.

That was my experience with the K701 pads on the K501, too. They made the K501 sound honky and muffled in the lower midrange.

Did you guys have any luck with the 601 pads?

EDIT: Where can I find 500 pads?

Oh BTW, got a pair of K501s off ebay

I put K601 earpads and foam rings on a K-400.
With very good results. More weight and punch to a already good sounding headphone. I preferred that combination over the stock K601.

I thought the K601 pads were better on the K501 than the stock pads. I've never tried the K701 or it's pads on anything so I don't know about them, but I felt that any of the other pads were better than the K501 pads.

I believe there are several versions of K501s out there. It may be true that the old versions of K501s lack bass compared to K701 but I don't find the bass quantity of my K501, which is the newest version, to be any lacking than that of K701.

Out of curiosity, did you try the 501 pads on the 701??

No. I wasn't too happy with K701s so I sold them. From what I heard, they say it took away the bass and made them sound like K501s but not nearly as good.

On a K500 I'm afraid. I don't think you'll be able to buy them separately.

Ditto. I don't think my K501 lacks bass compared to the K701. It does have a bit less than the K500 though.
