I worked as a bank teller through undergrad and we used to get a phony every week or two. Most came in from merchants who unwittingly took them. The funny thing about most of them was that they looked OK, but did not feel right. We usually detected them while hand-counting because of that.

It was a pain in the neck, too. We had to fill out a bunch of paperwork, call the Secret Service to come pick it up, and so on.

Also, one reason the Feds come down so hard on counterfeiters is because it's a premeditated crime. No one ever has a few beers, gets into an argument and starts engraving their own plates.
