Just heard the Dr. Dre Beats today

Here's a good one for you guys. I was once killing some time at BestBuy and decided to try out some beats on display. I had my iPod and started listening and couldn't believe people were actually paying 300 bucks for these headphones. In any case one of the girls who work there saw me demoing them and came over and asked how I liked them. Politely I said I wasn't that impressed with the sound quality. She looked at me all puzzled and responded she was surprised because everyone who tried them seemed to like them and then she said she was saving up to get herself a pair. I sort of felt sorry for the kid and asked her if she had ever tried a pair of Grado's. When she said no I took her over to the computer compartment and pulled up the Grado SR60 site page all the while telling her that she could save some serious money and get far better sound from a Grado. Her response was those things look so ugly they couldn't possibly sound good. I nearly did a face palm right then and there.

keep in mind, the employees get something like 60% off list for monster gear. I was speaking to one of the guys at the local Best Buys, since he remembered me from when I picked up the MD's, and was interested to hear my take on them; and told me his discount is "quite significant". Pretty sweet deal if they can score these things for under $200 :xf_eek:

Grados ARE ugly though, should've shown her some other ones.

I tried the full sized beats at a store here, I was actually physically revolted. I wouldn't even pay $100 for them

I hated them too when I listened at a Best Buy demo station. We bought a refurbished pair from Monster and they are much better than they sounded in the store. I don't think you can judge the sound accurately from the beat up store demo station.

Definitely; until you actually hear better; how do you know there is? The ONLY high end pair of headphones I have seen in a store were some Shure 210(#?). In Best Buy. On the bottom rack. The Beats were put on display at the top with their 300 price tag. If it costs that much it must sound good you know?

But yea, unless you actually find a site like this or read reviews posted of others online about the "real" stuff, you would never know it existed.

I am in exactly this boat. I went from Koss sparkplugs (for the bass/loudness) to the Creative ep-630's. I was told the sennheiser cx300's were better but they looked exactly the same and cost more so I was like "screw that". Then a while later my friend's dad gave him his Bose On-Ears. I listened to those for a while and was craving a more expensive set, and since I knew exactly what I was getting, I went ahead and bought those. They sounded almost identical to the ep-630's except offered a bit more clarity and comfort. That should have been a red flag right away: $160 for the sound quality of $30-45? Anyways, I went with those for a while until I caved and bought the monster turbines used, as I had lost my ep-630s. dang kitty stealin all my junk :p. Needless to say I was amazed. Now I know that there is another echelon of sound quality above even the turbines, as these dont even get that high reviews/ratings. I'm now saving up for either a fullsize set of AKG 701's, Sennheiser HD800's or something like that, OR a set of custom IEM's or a really nice set of universal IEM's. I havent decided which to go with yet.

I was looking at the Earsonics SM3 for universal vs the westone 3 or 4's, though I cant tell which of westone's series is better than the other series. For custom, I was looking at a set of custom Westone's, UE Reference series or UE 100's, or 1964 Ears's T or Q, depending on how things go.

I am also saving up and researching parts to build the Gamma 1 (Full++) and eventually Gamma 2 DAC's, and then if I go with Full size instead of in-ear, i'll be looking to build a tube amp too.

My gf also listened to my turbines just now and within 3 seconds she was able to tell the difference between those and whatever else she had used in the past. I made her jealous :). Similarly, my friend listened to my Audioengine A5's, which i only decided on after meticulous research. He now says "you are a very expensive friend to have" and is saving up to buy his own pair. And this is in a 9x9 room of drywall and wood furniture. NOT the best environment, needless to say. I am researching how to make some discrete damping panels to counteract the effects of my desk, and how to make some classy looking stands that wont fall over from being so top heavy.

I don't get how this post is related to the thread lol.

Anyway I tried the beats at bestbuy too, it was horrible; it really is all looks. I tried recommending other headphones to my friend who was looking at the beats, but he's like "no, i wanna look cool so im getting the beats".

Another time when i was looking at some headphones at futureshop, a sales assistant actually recommended me to get the shure srh840 and she told me that it sounds a lot better than beats. Finally a sales rep who actually knew something. :)

a lot of them do know they just persuade people to buy the beats due to higher paychecks if they do. i spoke to the people at my local futureshop and they agree with shure's and sennheiser's sounding much better then the beats.

I was responding to the "until you've heard better, how do you know what good sounds like" comment. I also heard both sets of beats, the full size and the portable versions. They are rather disgusting sounding. Hardly anything that comes out of them can be classified as music, but I still see everyone walking around with them. I would have been just as ignorant as the masses but for the fact that I got the turbines, and now I'm dead sure that the turbines arent the BEST headphones out there. I tend to rant :p

I had tours coz all the kids at my school had them and were boasting about how good they were. Bought them without thinking, then tried them at home...slightly better than my CX300II with crappy bass extension and screeching highs

IMHO, the CX300II is better.
