I have been looking at this DT770 (Looks like DT880 and has 250ohm rating) and it was "Buy It Now" for $200. The seller also had a "Make Offer" button so I shot him a $150 offer and he accepted. I was surprised since they were brand new and all. So now that I have them (well I'll have em tommorrow) I have a few questions.

EDIT: Here's link if anyone is interested in getting one! BRAND NEW BEYERDYNAMIC DT 770 DT770 2005 w/Leather case - eBay (item 290297986505 end time Mar-23-09 13:10:08 PDT)

1) What $200+/- non-portable amp would make them sound better and bring out a little more bass?

2) How do these sound compared to the 32ohm/80ohm versions?

3) Do they sound great with tube amplification or should I stick to solid state?

4) Any portable amps sound good with them?

I know I like the 32ohm version, but I suppose this higher impedance will smooth out the sound more as I thought the 32ohm one was a little brash sounding (not bad though, I'm used to Grados).

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Clok, I'll look into that amp.

Tiemen, you were right about their sound. It sounds fuller and has more weight. I like it a lot. Sounds like a sealed DT880 imo. That's a good thing.

Thanks chinesekiwi, I love LD amps as they sound "rich" to my ears.

Did you already get them? If so, how would you compare them to your dt880?

I got them yesterday since the place I ordered from is two hours away. They sound similar to the DT880, but the DT880 seems to have: slightly recessed mids, less bass, and a wider soundstage. Man these DT770's are brighter than my SR-325i! I hope they will mellow out with time.

So the DT770's have a bit more mid-range, faster transient response (IMO), and slightly piercing highs. The highs I can deal with, but everyone here made these things out to be bass monsters. In my opinion my SR-225i has more bass than these. I mainly got these for rap, but I'm kinda disappointed in the bass. The 80ohm version had better bass, though it seems to be separated from the whole sound signature like it's it's own entity.

I'm not to sure if I'm pleased with these. Kinda expected tone more bass. One thing to note is that the SR-325i has less bass than the SR-225i, but the SR-225i has more bass then the DT770

. This is very odd.

I hope these will gain more bass after they are used more, though I'm hardly a believer in burn in.

Because a lot of people are talking about the DT770 Pro 80 ohm, when the subject is an unspecified DT770. That is causing the confusion.
Everyone who listened to the DT770 2005 edition, will tell you that these are bass lean. And certainly not a bass monster.
They will not gain more bass with burn in.
FWIW, I found the bass on the 2005 edition a lot better than on the Pro 80 ohm. It's tight, fast and punchy IMO.

I don't want to open them up at all. Maybe if someone else can do it for me.

Tiemen, I have heard the 80ohm Pro and even that one's bass isn't powerful. This one (2005 version) seems to have more bass then the pro version to my ears.

Thanks for your quick review Zombie. Just a few more questions, so DT880's high is not so piercing as DT770? And other than what you described, their sound signature are very similar? I am thinking about getting a DT880 and I am just wondering if it is worth trying.

Overall the DT880 is more balanced sounding. They have less bass then the DT770, but their bass reproduction is unique. The DT880 bass is layered/textured and seems to be separated. What I mean is that bass isn't just one boom, but rather spread across the whole plane. You can definitely hear which part of the bass is for a particular instrument. It's hard to describe.

Also the DT770's stronger highs may be due to that fact that the cans are closed and it's just resonance. The DT770's are more lively and upfront though. Pretty good for rock. Good bass all around.

Is there anything else you would like to know?
