Joe Grado HP1000 modifications

Thanks for the responses.

I've actually owned a few pairs of lower end Grados over the years and really liked them, and got to reading about all the current high end models as well as these classic HP1000s. I just generally love all things from that '80s/'90s period so that's why my interest has been piqued by the HP1000 series as my first serious pair of cans. Thanks for the advice.

The drivers for the HP 1000 have really high between-unit consistency (source: my ears comparing more than four HP 1000 drivers-powered Grado models), which implies manufacturing precision in the world of headphone drivers, and a very low fail rate on Head-Fi, where most of the remaining HP 1000 users are or once were. The diaphragm is made out of single layer Mylar (BoPET, Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate) which is mechanically inert and chemically non-reactive. It has aged well in many headphones a lot older than the HP 1000. The HP 1000 themselves still sound the same as they did in 1989 according to many testimonies.

The pressed together sliding-rod and gimbal-ring* and glued ring and cylinder making up the cups for the HP 1000 (that's right they are a two pieces assembly) have detached on me once (I've done a cheap epoxy repair in response; this was the already all busted up pair I bought for cheap), but the drivers are rock solid to the touch and uses no foam or degradable parts like Purrin said.

*The gimbal defect occurred only because of a previous chock the headphones had (which permanently deformed the machined gimbal-ring) and because of me prying really hard on them to stretch the headband; on any better cared for HP 1000 this would never happen.

hey guys's Im thinking of trying out purrin's foam mod on my HP1000 but I cant seem to find a place that stocks the same kind of foam sheets he used or alternative brand. Im not sure what thickness it should be either searching for it but cant seem to find any mention of it.

I have a pair of SR200 with HP1000 drivers and Joe Grado "signature" cable, and I am very tempted to transplant these drivers to either wood or aluminum cups with wood sleeve (similar to PS-500s as made by elleven acoustica).  If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate any thoughts or advice about desoldering and resoldering, choice of cups, etc.  I have never done something like this before, but I have some beat up SR60s and SR80s to practice on -- if they prove successful, will the HP1000 job pose any difficulty? Do they have any wiring idiosyncrasies I should be aware of?  Is this a bad idea?
